District ESL Specialist
The District ESL Specialist will be responsible for the implementation and monitoring of the instructional and support program for English Language Learners in Barbour County Schools. The specialist will collaborate with building principals to ensure appropriate instructional and social supports are in place within the learning environment. The specialist will be responsible for ensuring district-wide compliance with district, state, and federal guidelines for initial screening, ongoing instruction, and continued monitoring of the English Language Learners. In addition, the ESL Specialist will collaborate with district and building principals to identify and address specific students needs through the design and implementation of professional development opportunities and targeted instructional coaching to support best practices in classroom instruction. Qualifications
Master's degree or higher from an accredited educational institution in English, Elementary Education, ESL, or Secondary Education Certified by the State of Alabama in the appropriate area. A minimum of three years of effective and successful classroom teaching in the areas of English Language Arts K-12. LETRS Certified or willingness to enroll and complete LETRS training. Demonstrates expertise in ESL policies and instructional practices. Proficiency in oral and written communication skills Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information Ability to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457 Alternatives or additions to the above qualifications as may deemed appropriate by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and/or Superintendent Duties and Responsibilities
Design and implement an effective ESL program that results in appropriate language acquisition and increased academic achievement among English Language Learners. Facilitate appropriate WIDA screening for newly enrolled students identified as English Language Learners. Provide high quality and evidence-based sheltered language instruction for English Language Learners. Develop, maintain, and conduct an annual review and revisioning if IELPs for all English Language Learners. Collect and analyze a collection of data to identify overarching themes and instructional needs. Develop and implement targeted professional development and coaching cycles to support classroom teachers in utilizing best practices in the instruction of English Language Learners. Collaborate with building, district, and state administrators and specialists to garner data-identified resources and partnerships to sustain continuous improvement of the district ESL program, including grant writing and strategic planning. Collaborate with building principals to supervise ESL instructional aides and deliver need-based training and professional development. Serve as district liaison with parents and families of English Language Learners to establish and sustain positive school-stakeholder relationships, as well as advocacy for the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs of English Language Learners. Collaborate with building, district, and state administrators to design and implement regular parent and community engagement events that addresses emerging needs and facilitates resources and supports. Supervise the annual WIDA ACCESS testing of all English Language Learners. Comply with all policies of LEA and the Alabama State Department of Education. Regularly attends professional development opportunities and conferences to continuously increase professional practice and capacity. With additional roles, responsibilities, and duties to be assigned as deemed appropriate by the Superintendent. Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
