EXEMPT Job Description:

The Coordinator for ESL & World Languages evaluates and provides leadership for the ESL and world languages instructional program. The coordinator is responsible for the effective and efficient operation of curriculum and professional development in the areas of the ESL and World Languages academic program in Birmingham City Schools. Duties and Responsibilities:

The following responsibilities are listed to provide a general nature and scope of work to be performed, but management reserves the right to modify responsibilities to meet organizational needs. General Expectations: Serves as the liaison between the district and community agencies to assist students needing ESL and world languages services (including Private Schools). Reviews and evaluates the curriculum through continuous monitoring. Assist the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction in the annual goal planning to meet system-wide curriculum and instruction objectives. Serves as the staff development generalist and/or EL specialist in the implementation of identified instructional goals and objectives for the district. Visits buildings in the district throughout the year. Submits updates and reports as requested by Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Performs other duties and functions as assigned by the Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction. Detailed Responsibilities: Provide support for implementation of the ESL curriculum Research and procure the most effective resource persons for teachers Assist principals in identified site-based programs with the hiring and training of ESL and world language teachers. Interpret instructional policy and reports to teachers/staff Hold new teacher orientation and follow-up staff development for new ESL, world language and general education teachers. Prepare budget and monitor district funds for ESL and World Language Programs Serve as resource person to building principals regarding ESL and World Language program budgets and hiring of ESL teachers. Work with vendors regarding district-wide as well as subject specific and/or site-based program needs Program Compliance and Monitoring Monitor district compliance of state requirements for the ESL program Works collaboratively with Title III, to screen students and develop equitable service plans for private schools funded through Birmingham City Schools Monitors and implements equitable service plans developed in consultation with Federal Programs specialist and principals of private schools. Implement procedures and coordinate the process to identify ESL students at all grade levels district wide. Review and maintain database of ESL hours for K-12 teachers on each campus and works collaboratively with HR to assign ESL teachers to schools based on identified need. Verify and maintain database of district ESL and World Language personnel Performs other related duties as assigned Qualifications:

Education & Experience: A Master's degree or higher with a major in Educational Administration or related field from an accredited institution. A valid Alabama Educator Certificate in the field of school administration. Appropriate course work in ESL or World Language. Three years successful administrative experience or classroom performance in ESL and/or World Language. Minimum five years of verifiable experience as a successful classroom teacher and/or administrator in a K-12 urban school district. Specific Training/Skills: Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to complete assignments and reports, along with preparing presentations for the public. Ability to balance several job functions at one time and work under a heavy work load. Ability to work in and contribute to creating a performance culture and highly collaborative environment. Ability to analyze statistical data for trends and standard performance in various programs and to develop strategies for improvement. Extensive knowledge of elementary & secondary curriculum and graduation requirements.
