They utilize professional knowledge to meet or exceed department guidelines and standards. The technician has a thorough understanding and proficiency in neurodiagnostic practices and procedures. Core EEG functions include routine outpatient and inpatient EEGs. Responsibilities also encompass prolonged routine EEGs to rule out brain death. Long-term continuous EEG in patients is part of the role. Outpatient event monitoring and private VEEGs are also included. Use of the 10-20 system for electrode placement, adapting to individual patients, is required. Advanced EEG functions involve VEEG inpatient event monitoring. The technician monitors multiple patients' EEGs and video during clinical events. They make appropriate notations on the EEG record and actively evaluate patients. Notifying physicians and nurses as necessary is essential. The technician monitors patients scheduled for ictal SPECT and assists as necessary. Performing EEGs during procedures and intra-operative EEG brain mapping is expected. Quality and safety assurance responsibilities include preventing injury related to clinical events. The technician understands how to notify the appropriate medical personnel promptly. They maintain electrical safety during all neurodiagnostic testing. Compliance with minimum standards and infection control standards is mandatory. Understanding potential risks, such as poor electrode connections and patient behaviors, is crucial. Education responsibilities include providing patient education relating to neurodiagnostic procedures. The technician provides on-the-job training for specific skills as appropriate. They strive to improve competency and obtain new skills through continuous education. Non-EEG functions may include evoked potentials and SSEP.
