Student Support Services Specialist

This position will focus on social-emotional development, attendance improvement, and student behavior. Working closely with the building principal, students, teachers, and families the Specialist will implement systems of support for individual, small group, and classroom support.

Student Support Services Specialist
One year position

Job Goal(s): The Specialist will play a vital role in helping to foster a positive, safe, inclusive, and respectful school climate. This position will focus on social-emotional development, attendance improvement, and student behavior. Working closely with the building principal, students, teachers, and families the Specialist will implement systems of support for individual, small group, and classroom support.
Qualifications
- Bachelors from an accredited college or university in Elementary Education, Counseling, Social Work or related discipline
- Masters Degree in related area preferred.
- Maine DOE Professional Certification OR
- Maine DOE Background Check (CHRC) & Experience in a prefered field
Student Support and Behavior Management Collaboration
- Works with
- The principal, school nurse, and staff to support the whole child.
- Teachers and support staff to address student behavior concerns through restorative practices, and structured intervention plans approved by the principal.
- Student support teams in meetings (IEP/504 meetings, behavior intervention) to support or develop plans as needed.
- Under the principal's guidance:
- Implements proactive behavior management strategies aligned with Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
- Maintains accurate documentation of student & family contacts and interventions.
- Is a member of the Dysregulated Student Response Team.
- Conducts student conferences and facilitates restorative conversations to help resolve conflicts and promote student accountability and growth.
- Promotes a positive school culture emphasizing respect, safety, responsibility, and kindness.
- Helps organize school-wide culture-building activities and recognition programs.
- Helps monitor common areas (hallways, playgrounds, cafeteria) to ensure student safety and positive behavior.
- Work with student support teams to develop and implement individualized behavior or support plans.
- Collaborate with families to support students' behavioral and emotional development.
- Communicate regularly and effectively with parents/guardians regarding student concerns, attendance, and behavior progress.
- Collaborate with the Family Engagement Coordinator and acts as a liaison between the school and families in navigating resources and services.
- Monitor student attendance and work with staff and families to address chronic absenteeism.
- Implement strategies with parents to promote daily attendance and reduce tardiness.
- Full Time School Year Only - 180 days
- Travel between schools or district buildings may be required at times
