The Director of Marketing will lead the Washington Spirit's social media and content strategy, overseeing the club's content marketing, CRM efforts, and digital fan engagement. This role is responsible for driving strategic alignment between brand storytelling and business performance, with a strong focus on audience development, fan loyalty, and long-term brand equity. At the heart of this position is the belief that storytelling is the most powerful tool to connect with fans, shape perception, and build emotional resonance with our brand. The ideal candidate is a visionary marketer who understands that great marketing doesn't just inform - it captivates. They will bring a deep passion for sports, a sharp editorial instinct, and a data-driven mindset to craft and elevate stories that fuel both engagement and growth.
The Director of Marketing will:

  • Lead and mentor social media and content teams, overseeing daily operations, team development, and cross-functional collaboration
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive content and fan engagement strategy that drives brand growth and emotional connection
  • Oversee the execution of the club's social media presence across Instagram, X/Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, and emerging platforms
  • Ensure storytelling is compelling, inclusive, and tailored to each digital channel, with voice and tone aligned with the Spirit's brand identity
  • Design and execute lifecycle marketing strategies using CRM, email marketing, and loyalty programs to deepen fan retention and loyalty
  • Collaborate with creative and production teams to lead marketing campaigns unified by strong, cohesive storytelling
  • Manage seasonal and evergreen marketing campaigns from ideation through execution, maintaining narrative continuity across platforms
  • Use audience insights, fan segmentation, and digital performance metrics to refine content strategies and improve fan conversion and retention
  • Establish and monitor KPIs that measure both creative impact (engagement, sentiment) and business outcomes (retention, lifetime value)
  • Partner with ticketing, partnerships, fan experience, and content departments to support business objectives with integrated campaigns
  • Champion innovative storytelling formats and digital trends to keep the Spirit at the forefront of sports marketing
  • Build efficient content workflows and marketing processes that support consistency, agility, and creativity
  • Ensure all content and messaging reflect the Spirit's values, voice, and commitment to community and diversity
The ideal candidate has:
  • 7-10 years of experience in marketing, digital engagement, or brand storytelling, ideally in sports, media, or entertainment
  • At least 5 years of leadership experience managing social, CRM, or content teams in a fast-paced, audience-driven environment
  • A proven record of developing high-impact, emotionally resonant campaigns that drive measurable fan growth or retention
  • Expertise in CRM platforms (e.g., Salesforce, HubSpot), email marketing tools, and digital analytics platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, Sprout Social)
  • A strong editorial and narrative instinct, with fluency in sports culture, digital media trends, and fan-first storytelling
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to craft compelling content across platforms and formats
  • Demonstrated success in cross-functional collaboration and campaign project management
  • A commitment to inclusive, authentic storytelling that reflects the Spirit's diverse fan base and values
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and game days to support live coverage and fan engagement
  • Creative thinking, innovation, and a passion for connecting communities through sport
Location:
This in-person role is based in Northern Virginia and requires regular attendance at the Spirit's Falls Church, VA corporate office and Leesburg, VA training facility, typically three to four days per week. Attendance at all Washington Spirit home games at Audi Field in Washington, DC is required. Travel with the team is not a requirement.
