Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Senior Accountant to join our team, focusing on accounting and reporting for real estate development and operating projects. This role offers the opportunity to manage a portfolio of projects across their full lifecycle-acquisition, development, operations, and disposition-while collaborating closely with internal teams and external partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform accounting and reporting for assigned development and operating projects.
- Manage monthly general ledger close processes in accordance with GAAP and/or Fair Value standards, including journal entry preparation and balance sheet account reconciliations.
- Review monthly income statements and balance sheets for accuracy.
- Prepare and record wires for cash contributions, distributions, draw fundings, interest expense, management fees, and other transactions.
- Partner with project teams to ensure timely collection of documentation required for monthly draw submissions.
- Set up contracts and change orders in the job cost system, including tracking retainage for projects under construction.
- Prepare reconciliations and monthly draw packages for equity and/or loan funding purposes.
- Calculate development and/or property management fees monthly.
- Prepare monthly Project Cost Summaries detailing construction status for development properties.
- Support capital calls for joint venture partners and prepare related reporting packages.
- Assess cash availability for weekly check runs in coordination with Accounting Management.
- Collaborate with stakeholders including development teams, property managers, capital partners, auditors, corporate accounting, tax teams, and lenders.
- Direct offshore teams through task delegation, training, and review of deliverables.
- Manage accounting for property acquisitions and dispositions, ensuring accurate GAAP-compliant journal entries.
- Prepare schedules for investment sales and related general ledger entries.
- Produce GAAP financial statements, supporting schedules, and assist with financial audits.
- Ensure compliance with lender reporting requirements.
- Assist in preparing annual CAM reconciliations and operating budgets for operating projects.
- Handle ad hoc requests and special projects as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; CPA preferred.
- Minimum 3 years' experience in public accounting, fund accounting, and/or commercial real estate accounting (development, operations, co-investments preferred).
- Advanced Excel proficiency.
- Strong organizational, planning, and analytical skills.
- Proactive, resourceful, and adaptable in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to interpret partnership agreements, purchase/sale agreements, loan agreements, and other governing documents.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
- Experience with JD Edwards or similar ERP/accounting software preferred.
- Understanding of partnership waterfalls is a plus.
