Responsibilities
The Forensic Scientist I works within the Forensic Toxicology Laboratory and responds to direction from the Supervisor and/or Group Lead on work objectives. This position reports to and is managed and evaluated by the Department Supervisor. Responsibilities include confirmation testing of donor specimens, including specimen preparation, extraction, and instrument operation.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain chain of custody of forensic specimens and follow sample handling procedures.
- Follow all departmental SOPs, prepare and verify reagents, ensure calibrators and controls are included in each batch, demonstrate good analytical technique, perform routine maintenance, and operate instruments as applicable.
- Maintain complete and legible documentation.
- Keep work area clean and organized.
- Conduct checks of temperature-sensitive equipment.
- Participate in method and instrument validation studies.
- Validate new calibrators, controls, and analytical procedures.
- Maintain productivity and quality levels, report issues to supervisor.
- Complete continuing education and competency checks.
- Follow supervisor directives and company policies.
- Document quality control activities.
- Adhere to work schedule set by supervisor.
- Maintain a professional environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelors degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, or Medical Technology. Alternative majors require specific coursework in Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics, with transcripts reviewed and approved prior to employment.
Work Experience
- At least 1 year of laboratory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of laboratory methods and procedures preferred.
- Ability to perform routine motions such as pipetting.
- Ability to stand or sit for long periods.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- General systems knowledge and data analysis skills.
