Pediatric Cardiology Center of Oregon (PCCO) is seeking a full-time pediatric cardiac sonographer to join our team. We are a private pediatric cardiology practice with an IAC/ICAEL-accredited outpatient echocardiogram lab and a team of five (5) board-certified pediatric cardiologists located in north Portland on the Legacy Emanuel/Randall Childrens Hospital campus.

Our ideal candidate is enthusiastic about working with pediatric populations and is self-motivated to produce high-quality transthoracic echo images for patients ranging from newborn-aged to adults with congenital heart disease. Candidate must be able to work well both independently and with a team. Candidates must be able to perform the job functions outlined below at a highly technical level with little to no supervision.

This position is based at our main clinic at Emanuel Hospital with coverage of outreach clinics in Oregon and Washington. The hours are Monday through Friday, ranging from 7:45 am-5:00 pm, depending on the daily schedule needs. No overnight call or weekend coverage.

Experience preferred but not required. Starting pay will range between $57-$67 per hour and will be based on the candidates level of experience in pediatric/congenital cardiology.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE): Perform TTE on pediatric (and some adult) patients for the evaluation of complex congenital heart disease; ability to operate ultrasound equipment utilizing a variety of possible techniques, including M-mode, two-dimensional, pulsed and continuous wave Doppler flow mapping. Prepare patients for echo scans; explain the process and procedure thoroughly to patients and parents, answering questions and calming concerns; adjust equipment and patient positions for each examination to maximize the quality of the images obtained; ability to recognize and record cardiac pathology so the cardiologist can render a diagnosis; determine the need or additional views depending on patient variables or demonstrated pathology; manipulate transthoracic probe by hand over diagnostic areas to image cardiac structures and visualize hemodynamic flow patterns as necessary; select appropriate scan based on significant functional and/or anatomical pathology; record representative images for review by Pediatric Cardiologists.
  • Outreach: Transport portable echo/EKG machines to and from outreach locations and downloads the studies to PCCOs PACs system for storage when returning to the main office. When at outreach clinic; Greet families; obtain patient height and weight; perform TTEs as described above, perform electrocardiograms (EKG) at outreach locations when requested.
  • Echo reporting: Accurately enters data obtained from echo images into the patients Electronic Medical Record (EMR), including measurements, Dopplers, and summary of findings; publishes final reports in the EMR; transfers echo data from the echo machine to PCCOs PACS server for storing.
  • Scheduling coverage: Planning schedules for monthly echo tech coverage based on clinic needs.
  • Miscellaneous: Perform regular cleaning, sanitization, and adjustments on machines and probes; report any technical or mechanical problems to management; assist with training of new sonographers; ensures IAC compliance and assists with ICAEL certification process when necessary; maintains daily echo logs for main office and outreach locations; virtually attend weekly Thursday morning cardiosurgical conference to take notes for CME tracking for doctors and echo techs and prepare imaging studies for patients being reviewed in conference. Perform all facility duties delegated by the medical director.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 10 pounds.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates or Bachelors degree in Non-Invasive Cardiovascular Technology from an approved and accredited program OR completion of a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CHAAHEP) approved ultrasound program OR equivalent combination of education, formal training, and work experience.
  • Board Certification or eligibility for certification by American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) OR by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Cardiac Congenital Sonographer (RCCS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS). Must be certified within a year of hire.
  • Sonographer license issued by Oregon Board of Medical Imaging. Must be active as of start date.
  • Maintaining continuing medical education units (CMEs) on an ongoing basis.
  • Ability to travel to outreach locations throughout Oregon and Washington.
  • Maintain active CPR certification

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two years of experience in pediatric echocardiography with patients with complex congenital heart disease.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English is a bonus.
