The Financial Analyst will be an integral part of the Hornets Sports & Entertainment (HSE) Finance team, providing critical financial insights to support business decisions and drive the long-term success of the organization. You will be performing detailed financial analysis, forecasting, budgeting, and reporting, with a focus on revenue streams, operating expenses, and profitability across various business segments, including concerts, events and the Greensboro Swarm. To be successful in this role you will need a strong financial background, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex financial information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Financial Analysis & Reporting

    • Conduct thorough financial analysis, including revenue, expenses, and profitability for various business units (e.g., ticket sales, sponsorship, concessions, merchandise, concerts, media rights).
    • Prepare regular financial reports, highlighting key trends, variances and insights to support decision-making across the organization.
    • Provide insights into revenue trends and expense variances to optimize financial performance.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting

    • Assist in the preparation of the annual organizational budget and periodic forecasts, working closely with business leaders and department heads to ensure financial projections align with organizational goals.
    • Identify and monitor actual financial performance against budget, identifying areas for improvement and providing recommendations for corrective action.
    • Analyze revenue streams and operating expenses, tracking performance against forecasts and historical data.
  • Financial Modeling & Scenario Analysis

    • Develop and maintain financial models to evaluate potential business opportunities, investments, or cost-saving initiatives.
    • Perform scenario analysis to assess the impact of different business decisions on overall financial performance.
  • Concert & Event Support

    • Collaborate with promoters, event coordinators, and internal departments to develop accurate revenue forecasts for concerts and events.
    • Ensure that all relevant revenue streams and associated costs are included in the forecast, and work to adjust forecasts as necessary based on changing event circumstances.
    • Work with promoters and internal teams to track concert and event performance and closeout financials. This includes reconciling actual event revenue and expenses against forecasted figures, analyzing variances, and providing detailed post-event financial reports.
    • Ensure that all event financials are accurately captured and reported in a timely manner.
    • Assist member of the Finance team with night of show settlement reports.
  • NBA G League Financial Reporting

    • Manage the revenue recognition and League reporting requirements for the Greensboro Swarm (no travel requirements).
  • Data-Driven Decision Support

    • Work closely with business units to provide data-driven financial insights that inform strategic decisions.
    • Help interpret financial results and offer actionable recommendations to optimize business performance and profitability.
  • Ad-hoc Analysis & Special Projects

    • Perform ad-hoc financial analyses and support special projects as needed.
    • Provide financial support for new initiatives, business opportunities, or strategic plans, ensuring financial feasibility and alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration

    • Collaborate with other departments to ensure alignment of financial strategies and to provide timely financial information for decision-making.
  • Process Improvement & Best Practices

    • Assist in streamlining financial processes and reporting mechanisms.
    • Identify areas for process improvement and work across department to implement more efficient workflows and reporting tools.

Required Skills, Experience, and Abilities

  • Bachelors degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics or a related field.
  • CFA, CPA, or MBA preferred but not required.
  • 2-5 years of experience in financial analysis, FP&A, or related financial roles, preferably within a sports, entertainment, or media organization.
  • Experience with financial modeling, budgeting, and forecasting processes.
  • Proficiency in managing and communicating data within Microsoft Excel (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUP, financial modeling).
  • Experience with financial planning software or business intelligence tools (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Tableau, Power BI) preferred.
  • Strong understanding of basic accounting principles.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and translate it into actionable insights.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present financial findings to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
  • Highly organized with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Professional demeanor with the ability to engage with all levels of the organization and external stakeholders.
  • Flexibility to occasionally work evenings, weekends, and holidays during the NBA season and other events.
