Are you a creative storyteller with a passion for wildlife conservation and a talent for developing collaborative relationships? The Indianapolis Zoo is looking for a dynamic Communications Manager to craft responses and content for media and drive a consistent message across all platforms. As part of the Public Relations team, this role is instrumental in promoting the Zoo's mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. You'll develop engaging content and draft press releases, proof/create printed content for other departments, contribute to internal communications needs and be the first point of contact for all incoming media inquiries.
What You'll Do Develop and maintain relationships with local, regional, national, and international media outlets including traditional news outlets, scientific journals, and industry publications. Serve as the initial point of contact for all incoming media inquiries and lead earned media efforts. Write and distribute press releases as needed and in collaboration with the PR Director. Organize and manage press conferences and other media availabilities. Monitor and manage the Zoo's public relations email account. Track earned media placements and share with staff, board, and stakeholders as needed. Analyze media coverage, report findings, and advise on earned media strategy. Coordinate enhancements of ongoing internal communications improvements the Zoo. Serve on crisis communications response team. Create and maintain media distribution lists. Update the Zoo's media kit.
What We're Looking For
Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or related field of study and at least 5 years of media relations or journalism experience. Ability to understand communications needs of the Zoo, and implement and improve processes, as needed. Strong written and oral communication skills, including comfort in use of AP Style. Familiarity with the Indianapolis Zoo, its departments and its global animal conservation mission. Experience enhancing workplace culture via internal communications. Robust network of media contacts. Staying up to date on communications best practices, especially internal communications. Experience in strategic planning, media relations, and crisis communications. Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.
