Job Summary

The Retention Coordinator reports to the Associate Director of TRIO-Student Support Services. Their main responsibility is to assist in providing services to high-risk traditional-aged freshman students, continuing program participants, and transfer students through the federally funded TRIO programs, specifically the Student Support Services STEM and Health Sciences program. The Retention Coordinator will also help recruit the 345 eligible participants as outlined in the grant application. The primary goal of the Retention Coordinator is to support this high-risk population of students, helping them persist toward graduation and enrollment in Graduate School. Additionally, the Retention Coordinator Program will play a key role in developing and implementing Ronald McNair's summer program services for undergraduate students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have expressed interest in graduate education. The Retention Coordinator will participate in university committees, attend state and regional TRIO Conferences, and take part in national professional development workshops and trainings. Their role is to ensure that TRIO-Student Support Services is fully committed to the needs of students and provides quality services in line with the university's mission statement and assisting their efforts in persisting toward graduation and enrollment in Graduate School.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the needs of students with high risks to poor performance, and academic persistence. Knowledge and understanding of the needs of under-represented populations in doctoral degree attainment, low income, and first-generation students, and students with disabilities and the obstacles that they encounter throughout college and into graduate school. Knowledge of academic programs and university policies and procedures. Knowledge of best practices, theories, and strategies for retention and the success of low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students. Knowledge of guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Education as stated in the Education Department General Administrative Regulation, 0MB A-121, Federal Register, and the approved grant. Excellent interpersonal, administrative, and organizational skills. Computer skills, including proficiency with the Banner System, social media platforms, and database applications High energy and hard work with skills needed to work as a team, or independently. Professional presentation skills. Ability to build rapport with students and maintain frequent and consistent in-person contact with students throughout the academic semesters. Ability to facilitate program services related to a high-risk student population. Ability to work as a team, or independently. Ability to resolve conflicts. Ability to supervise individuals and groups. Ability to write/communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and administrators ability to gather, analyze, and interpret data. Required Qualifications

Master's Degree (or will have Master's Degree before the official start date.) Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in education, counseling, social work, human services, or related field. Experience in conducting professional presentations, advising undergraduates, and recruiting TRIO-eligible students in higher education. Two years of experience with organizing and facilitating an educational program. Two years of experience in working with traditional aged, transfer, nontraditional/ continuing college students, and students who are under-represented in doctoral programs. Two years of experience in working with first-generation and low-income students, students who are under represented in doctoral programs, as well as students with documented disabilities. One year TRIO experience preferred and/or training in, sensitivity to or experience in successfully overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the project's target population.
