The Quality Technical Services Supervisor at Berner Food & Beverage supports the Lab Lead and micro-lab technicians with daily laboratory operations, ensuring accurate documentation, effective data management, and timely reporting of results. This position also helps maintain compliance with regulatory, internal, and customer requirements across all departmental functions.
Additionally, the supervisor assists in developing and updating laboratory standard operating procedures, driving continuous improvement initiatives, and participating in root cause investigations. This role also acts as the manager’s backup as needed, which requires proficiency in all Quality Technical Services programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: · Uphold and enforce strict adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), safety protocols, and laboratory documentation requirements to meet internal standards and regulatory requirements such as FDA, SQF, and GFSI. · Provide ongoing support to the Quality Technical Services Manager and Micro Laboratory Lead in coordinating, monitoring, and optimizing the day-to-day operations of the Micro-Analytical Laboratory. This includes but is not limited to: assigning and prioritizing daily and weekly tasks, verifying technician data accuracy, and ensuring all analyses are performed according to established protocols. Supervisor and streamline communication of laboratory test results to cross-functional teams—including Quality Assurance, Production, and R&D—to support rapid decision-making and product release timelines. · Ensure thorough root-cause analysis and corrective action planning following the detection of out-of-specification (OOS) microbiological or analytical test results, including trend analysis and documentation of findings. · Contribute to the periodic review, update, and creation of standard operating procedures (SOPs), lab protocols, and laboratory quality policies, ensuring continuous improvement and compliance with new regulations or industry best practices. · Serve as an alternate point (back-up) of contact for all third-party laboratory sample submissions, result tracking, and reporting processes in the laboratory lead’s absence. · Develop and maintain lab technician schedules, ensuring adequate coverage during busy periods and managing shift adjustments to accommodate PTO requests without disrupting essential operations. · Ensure and monitor laboratory supply levels, forecast inventory needs, and coordinate timely ordering of reagents, media, and consumables to prevent disruptions in analysis schedules. · Ensure and oversee the accuracy, organization, and retention of laboratory records and technical documentation to ensure readiness for both scheduled and unannounced regulatory, customer, and internal audits (audit ready). · Assist the Technical Services Manager in preparing for and facilitating third-party, regulatory, and customer audits by assembling required documentation, supporting facility tours, and responding to auditor inquiries. · Assist Technical Services Manager, when needed, for core programs such as pest control, routine GMP audits, and environmental pathogen monitoring, acting as the manager’s representative to maintain business continuity. · Partner with other department leaders to review and revise environmental and finished product sampling sites, conduct risk assessments, and update test plans to optimize food safety surveillance within the facility. · Apply Food Safety and Quality to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the food safety implications of laboratory testing results and how these results impact broader product safety, compliance, and customer trust. · Maintains up-to-date knowledge and credentials in food safety (such as HACCP and PCQI certifications), ensuring laboratory practices reflect current standards and regulatory expectations along with any necessary certifications. · Collaborate with peers from Quality, Production, Warehousing, and Maintenance to support the implementation, improvement, and troubleshooting of Quality Technical Services-owned programs, fostering a culture of food safety and continuous improvement across the organization.
Education and Qualifications: · Associate’s degree or higher in a science-related field preferred; relevant experience accepted in lieu of degree. · 3 to 5 years of experience leading or supervisory experience within a Food/Beverage Manufacturing Quality laboratory. · PCQI and HACCP certification preferred or willingness to complete upon hire. · Strong background in microbiological testing, lab operations, and food safety systems. · Excellent organizational, documentation, and time-management skills. · Advanced proficiency in lab troubleshooting and new analyses implementation. · Effective communication skills in both writing and speaking.
Working Conditions: Laboratory, office, and manufacturing environment. Use of required PPE and adherence to all safety and GMP protocols. Pay Range: 75,000.00-90,000.00 (based on experience). Full medical, dental, and vision benefits are offered along with 401k plan.
