This is a hybrid role based out of our HQ office near Portland, Oregon. The expectation is for employees to be in-office 3 days or more per week, depending on business need. This in-office expectation is subject to change at business discretion.
ABOUT THE POSITION
The Senior Apparel Designer is an influential team member in the design efforts to create original, function-led, innovative designs that reflect the company's design ethos. Demonstrates proficiency in an area of design. Researches the needs and requirements of the outdoor consumer through trends in the market (color, style, retail), and other relevant activities. Responsible for a category of product and displays a strong creative point of view through concept creation, development (including tech packs, style reviews, and participation in fit sessions), color application, and full-sample validation.
HOW YOU'LL MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Provides sketches and line art to communicate full category design concepts, including multiple views and detail sketches as necessary. Creates sketches with the consumer's needs in mind, exceeding product brief expectations around pricing, function, and aesthetic.
Facilitates and leads cross-category design team meetings to provide design and concept board direction to communicate seasonal concepts. Represents design at presentations to articulate seasonal concepts.
Develops and maintains open communication with merchandising, materials research, product development, fit engineering, and costing teams. Initiates conversations and ensures positive working relationships.
Leads prototype processes for assigned categories, including initiating early concept styles, working with technical designers and product developers, reviewing samples, and directing revisions throughout development.
Participates in fit sessions and team meetings to facilitate process, revisions, and finalization of products.
Maintains knowledge of materials, textiles, components, and technologies. Works with materials research to explore new materials and trends.
Understands market and competitive landscape, industry trends, and target consumer. Leads seasonal trend discussions and cross-functional alignment, presenting trends internally.
Leads the development of the creative vision for designated product categories.
Creates innovative solutions, emphasizing innovation in designs. Demonstrates a high level of creativity and risk-taking to drive brand growth.
YOU ARE Able to solve complex problems independently and work under pressure.
Detail-oriented with the ability to handle collection intricacies.
Capable of managing multiple projects, adjusting priorities as needed.
Effective at working cross-functionally with various teams and partners.
An excellent communicator, establishing positive relationships across levels and fields.
YOU HAVE Bachelor's degree, applicable certification, or equivalent experience.
Typically 5-8 years of professional garment design experience, preferably with outdoor industry experience.
Skills to solve complex problems and develop independent, creative solutions.
Deep knowledge of apparel design principles and concepts. Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator required.
Strong business acumen, understanding how design fits within the larger company context.
Ability to explain complex design problems and build team consensus.
Focus on process optimization and efficiency.
Excellent time management, discretion, and confidentiality skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects.
