LHH is partnered with a global AmLaw 100 law firm that is seeking a strategic and results-oriented Director of Accounting & Tax. This senior leadership role is responsible for supporting the oversight of all aspects of accounting governance, tax strategy and compliance, and partner financial management. The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in partnership taxation, multistate and international tax compliance, and the leadership of high-performing accounting teams. Experience within a law firm is strongly preferred; candidates from other complex, partnership-based professional services organizations will also be considered. Key Responsibilities Direct all accounting operations, including general ledger, payroll accounting, and treasury functions. Manage month-end and year-end close processes with a focus on accuracy, timeliness, and transparency. Provide technical accounting guidance on complex transactions and ensure compliance with applicable standards. Strengthen internal controls and ensure adherence to firm policies and regulatory requirements. Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing accounting and tax team. Serve as a strategic advisor to the CFO and firm leadership on financial planning, risk management, and operational strategy. Operational Excellence Lead financial systems implementations and upgrades, including ERP and payroll platforms. Collaborate with IT and operations to automate workflows and enhance reporting capabilities. Identify and implement process improvements to drive efficiency and reduce risk. Oversee partner compensation, capital accounts, and related financial reporting in accordance with the partnership agreement. Manage tools and portals for partner elections, tax withholding, and capital tracking. Ensure timely and accurate delivery of quarterly tax filings, annual summaries, and compensation communications. Lead the firm’s global tax strategy, ensuring compliance across federal, state, local, and international jurisdictions. Oversee pass-through entity (PTE) compliance, use tax reporting, and audit defense. Maintain strong relationships with external tax advisors and regulatory authorities. Monitor evolving tax legislation and proactively assess its impact on the firm. Qualifications 15+ years of proven leadership experience in accounting and tax within a law firm or similar partnership-based professional services organization. Deep knowledge of cash basis accounting, multistate and international tax compliance, and pass-through entity taxation. Demonstrated success in managing complex accounting operations and leading financial systems implementations. Strong understanding of internal controls, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and educate senior stakeholders. Experience with Elite or similar law firm financial management systems is strongly preferred. CPA or equivalent certification is highly desirable.
