Job Summary:
The Regional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key leadership team member for the St. Louis and Southern Illinois Region, a $5B integrated academic health system. This role provides strategic and operational financial leadership across a portfolio that includes two fully academic hospitals, seven community hospitals, over 1,100 employed physicians, outpatient services, and academic and research enterprises, including over 600 resident physicians. The Regional CFO ensures financial sustainability while advancing the mission of patient care, education, and research in alignment with regional and system-wide goals.
Job Responsibilities and Requirements:
Strategic Financial Leadership:
Develop, implement and align financial strategies supporting both the academic health system and the community ministries.
Partner with the Regional President and health system leaders to align clinical and academic funding models.
Evaluate and structure business development opportunities, clinical expansions, and capital projects focusing on long-term impact and viability.
Financial Operations & Performance:
Lead the financial oversight of all hospitals and medical group operations, ensuring efficient operations, appropriate cost structures, and strong margin performance.
Drive financial performance improvement through enhanced revenue cycle management, payer contracting strategies, and cost-reduction initiatives.
Oversee the preparation and management of operating and capital budgets for hospitals, medical group operations, and research operations.
Provide leadership in the development and the continuous evaluation of short and long-term strategic financial objectives. Develops, implements, and periodically updates a strategic financial plan/long range financial forecast, in collaboration with System finance team.
Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees, and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
Teaching & Research Finance Oversight:
Ensure accurate financial tracking and compliance for GME (Graduate Medical Education) funding, Medicare DGME/IME reimbursement, and academic subsidies.
In partnership with academic leadership and the University, support the financial management of research grants, clinical trials, and investigator-initiated projects.
Collaborate with academic finance leaders to develop long-range financial models for medical education and research growth.
Governance, Compliance & Reporting:
Maintain robust financial controls and ensure compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and audit requirements.
Deliver regular financial reporting and analysis to regional and system governance bodies.
Leadership & Collaboration:
Lead a multidisciplinary team of finance professionals across hospital and academic departments.
Foster a collaborative culture that bridges clinical and academic priorities to drive shared success.
Build trusted relationships with physician leaders, faculty, department administrators, and external stakeholders.
Skills:
Expertise in hospital finance, physician practice economics, fund flow models, and academic subsidy structures.
Strong analytical acumen and ability to translate complex financial data into actionable insights.
Exceptional leadership, communication, and relationship management skills.
Ten years' experience, with 5 in leadership.
