Emptying Foley catheters is the responsibility of RNs. Vital signs and assessments may need to be done more frequently if required. Drips may be used if only one is titrated. All patients in intermediate care are considered fall risks. No patient is left alone in the bathroom or at a bedside commode. Patients with intermediate orders are monitored at all times. There is a telemetry technician at the desk to watch monitors. Every patient is to be turned or repositioned every two hours, even independent patients may need encouragement. Bedside reports and purposeful 4 P Rounding are completed by RNs and patient care technicians. RNs and patient care technicians communicate at the beginning of the shift to discuss specific orders and tentative plans for activity and bathing. Patient care technicians are responsible for feeding patients if needed, bathing, completing activity, blood sugar checks, passing ice waters, stocking supplies, and emptying trash. All staff members utilize the care boards in patient rooms. Skills required include familiarity with equipment such as EPIC, medication systems, IV pumps, cardiac monitors, and lift equipment. Floating may be required to other cardiac stepdown units, adult general medicine units, or ICU if the RN has ICU experience. The nurse-to-patient ratio in this unit is approximately 3:1. Any non-pediatric scrubs are acceptable.
