About the Position
The expected salary range for this role on hire is $ $45,111 to $64,316.
WHO WE ARE
The Silver Spring Urban District is hiring several full-time Public Service Workers to perform a variety of manual labor tasks to maintain the beautification of the Silver Spring Urban Business District.
The Silver Spring Urban District (SSUD) supports and enhances the County's Silver Spring commercial district as a vibrant, thriving, livable urban center by maintaining the streetscape and its investments. The Urban Districts provide additional public amenities such as plantings, seating, shelters, and works of art as well as promoting the commercial and residential interests of these areas which include cultural programming and community activities.

What You'll Be Doing
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Public Service Workers are part of a team that are responsible for the maintenance, repair and beautification of the Silver Spring downtown district. A few of the ways you will make a difference in the community:
  • Maintaining landscape and streetscape standards
  • Collecting litter, recycling and sweeping/cleaning sidewalks
  • Removing graffiti
  • Performing light brick repair work
  • Supporting the special festivals and events in the district
  • Assisting the work of the Public Service Aides
Other important information:
This position REQUIRES possession of a valid driver's license from applicant's state of residence, and the ability to drive a county vehicle to transport tools and equipment to perform duties at different work sites.
In this position, employees work outdoors in varying weather conditions. This position requires frequent periods of walking, standing, kneeling, and operation of trucks or work vehicles.
Schedule: Current work shifts are 4days/week :
  • 6 AM - 4 PM or 12 Noon - 10 PM with one scheduled weekend day.
  • Occasional overtime, weekend, and holiday work hours are required.
The individuals selected for this position will be considered an "Essential Employee". Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency or liberal leave.
Prior to appointment, selected applicants will have to complete a medical examination with a drug/alcohol screen and a background clearance.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: None.
Education: Ability to read and write in English and carry out simple written instructions.
Equivalency: None.
Physical Ability :
  • Ability and willingness to perform work for prolonged periods in severe weather.
  • Ability to exert moderate physical effort for prolonged periods and heavy physical effort for limited periods.
License : Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.
Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences

Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:
  • GED or High school diploma equivalency.
  • Two or more years of experience providing direct work in urban maintenance services.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written and spoken mediums.
  • Experience with power tools or construction and working in extreme conditions.
  • Experience delivering waste management and maintenance services for a municipality or public grounds.
  • Experience delivering streetscaping maintenance services, infrastructure repair, and asset restoration for a municipality or public grounds.
  • Experience delivering landscape maintenance services, tree management work, planting, or leafing service for a municipality or public grounds.

Leave Benefits
