They use professional knowledge to meet or exceed department guidelines. The technician must have thorough knowledge and proficiency in neurodiagnostic practice and procedures. Core EEG functions include: Routine outpatient and inpatient EEGs. Prolonged routine EEGs to rule out ECS (brain death). Long-term continuous EEGs in patients. Outpatient event monitoring. Private VEEGs and using the 10-20 system for electrode placement, adapting to patients when needed. Advanced EEG functions include: VEEG inpatient event monitoring. Monitoring multiple patients' EEG and video in the EMU. Making appropriate notations on the EEG record. Actively evaluating patients during clinical events. Notifying physicians or nurses as necessary. Monitoring patients scheduled for ictal SPECT. Observing VEEG to detect seizure onset. Assisting as needed for clinical scenarios. Performing EEGs in the Interventional Radiology lab during WADA procedures. Conducting intracarotid EEG recording. Engaging in intra-operative EEG brain mapping. Quality and safety assurance involves: Monitoring to prevent injury related to clinical events or falls. Understanding the mechanisms for notifying nurses, doctors, or rapid response teams. Maintaining electrical safety during all neurodiagnostic testing. Complying with minimum standards and infection control standards. Recognizing potential risks such as poor electrode connections and electrical interference. Education: Applying knowledge to provide patient education related to neurodiagnostic procedures. Providing on-the-job training for specific skills as appropriate. Striving to improve competency and obtain new skills through training and formal education. Non-EEG functions include: Evoked potentials and SSEP.
