CNC Operator
The CNC Operator is responsible for the setup, programming, and operation of a variety of computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools. This includes presses, grinders, mills, and lathes used in the fabrication of precision components according to engineering drawings and customer specifications. This role demands a strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement. Operators must also contribute to process development and help establish or refine standard operating procedures for both new and existing products and processes.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Machine Operation & Setup:
- Set up and operate interrelated machine tools, including CNC mills, lathes, grinders, and presses.
- Adjust machines for production runs, ensuring correct tool placement, machine alignment, and part specifications.
- Load and unload raw materials and finished parts from machines.
- Use precision measuring tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, gauges) to verify part conformance to specifications.
- Conduct machine tests to ensure the proper function and performance of equipment.
- Programming & Process Improvement:
- Develop, modify, and write CNC programs for new and existing parts, optimizing cycle time, accuracy, and tool life.
- Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
- Recommend and help implement standard operating procedures for improved efficiency and quality.
- Make necessary adjustments during production to ensure consistent part quality.
- Provide feedback to engineering and leadership regarding program improvements and tooling suggestions.
- Quality Assurance & Safety:
- Follow established safety protocols and company policies at all times.
- Perform in-process inspections and document results in accordance with quality standards.
- Identify and report any machine malfunctions, non-conforming products, or safety hazards to supervisors.
- Ensure work area is clean, organized, and free of hazards (general housekeeping).
- Participate in continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives.
General & Cross-Functional Duties:
- Assist with miscellaneous material handling, such as moving parts and materials between work areas.
- Be flexible and willing to assist in other departments or functions as production needs demand.
- Support team-based manufacturing goals and communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
- Maintain accurate production and quality records as required.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
- 2+ years of experience operating CNC machinery preferred, but entry-level candidates with technical aptitude will be considered.
- Strong mechanical reasoning and understanding of machining processes.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and technical documents.
- Proficient in using basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to follow both written work instructions and verbal directions closely.
- Comfortable working with precision tools and in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 8-10 hours per shift).
- Ability to lift, carry, and move materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Must have sufficient dexterity and coordination to handle small parts.
