Position Summary The Director of Finance is the organization's top financial leader, responsible for developing financial strategy, ensuring excellence in accounting operations, and providing clear financial insights to support executive decisions. This role combines strategic planning with practical oversight of the finance function, making sure the company maintains financial stability, complies with regulations, and reaches growth goals in the highly regulated cannabis industry. Working closely with the CEO, senior management, and external advisors, the Director of Finance will lead efforts to improve cash flow, manage costs, and deliver accurate, timely financial reports. The position is also a key contact with third-party tax professionals to guarantee full compliance with tax and regulatory requirements. Strategic Leadership Partner with the CEO and leadership team to develop and implement the organization's financial strategy, aligning resources with short- and long-term business goals. Lead financial forecasting, budgeting, and long-term planning processes. Analyze market conditions, industry benchmarks, and operational performance to identify growth opportunities, reduce risks, and support executive decision-making. Assist with corporate development efforts, including mergers, acquisitions, and capital projects. Manage the design and implementation of financial policies, internal controls, and systems to protect assets and promote sustainable growth. Direct and oversee all daily finance operations, including accounting, payroll, accounts payable (AP), accounts receivable (AR), cash management, month-end close, and reconciliations. Ensure timely preparation and distribution of accurate financial statements, including monthly, quarterly, and annual reports. Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and financial trends, providing actionable insights to the executive team. Manage the preparation and filing of all required financial and tax reports, including sales tax, manufacturing excise tax, and quarterly tax deposits. Supervise internal audits and coordinate with external auditors for year-end audits. (DHS, State, Federal, or Financial Statement Audits) Oversee the calculation of product standard costs and maintain robust inventory cost accounting systems. Systems & Process Optimization Implement and optimize business intelligence (BI) tools for advanced retail POS data analysis and reporting. Continuously evaluate and improve financial workflows to increase efficiency, accuracy, and transparency. Establish best practices for compliance and operational control across all financial processes. Leadership & Team Development Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team to build a high-performing department supporting day-to-day and strategic needs. Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the finance function. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment between financial planning and operational execution. Executive Performance Metrics Success in this role will be evaluated against the following high-level metrics: Cash Flow Management:
Maintain or exceed targeted working capital thresholds and positive cash flow levels set by the CEO and board. Margin Improvement:
Achieve gross margin and net margin targets established in the annual budget. Budget Accuracy:
Variance between budget and actual results not to exceed agreed tolerances Compliance & Audit:
100% on-time filing of all tax obligations and successful completion of annual audits with no material findings. Cost Control:
Implement and sustain cost reduction initiatives for targeted expense ratio improvements. Strategic Initiatives:
Completing strategic projects (e.g., ERP upgrades, process automation, M&A due diligence) on time and within budget. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA, or MBA preferred). Minimum of 10+ years of progressive finance leadership experience, preferably in a regulated industry; cannabis industry experience strongly preferred. Proven success in both strategic planning and operational finance execution. Exceptional analytical skills and the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights. Strong leadership presence with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated expertise in financial systems, ERP, payroll, and BI platforms. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Must meet all state requirements for employment in the cannabis industry, including being at least 21 years of age, passing a criminal background check, and maintaining a clean driving record.
