Communications Manager

The Communications Manager is responsible for developing and executing strategic communication initiatives that enhance the visibility, reputation, and guest engagement of the ski resort. This role ensures consistent messaging across all internal and external channels, supports brand storytelling, manages media relations, and plays a key role in crisis communication and guest information strategies. Essential Functions: Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies to support resort marketing, guest services, and brand positioning. Serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries, press releases, and public relations efforts. Manage the resort's editorial calendar, ensuring timely and relevant content across all platforms. Write, edit, and distribute internal and external communications, including newsletters, announcements, blog posts, and social media content. Collaborate with marketing, events, operations, and guest services teams to align messaging and support resort-wide initiatives. Monitor media coverage and public sentiment; prepare reports and recommend adjustments to communication strategies. Lead crisis communication planning and execution in coordination with leadership and safety teams. Support executive communications, including speeches, talking points, and stakeholder messaging. Maintain and update website content related to resort news, operations, and guest information. Work with the Brand Director to ensure brand voice and tone are consistent across all communication channels. Lead the global marketing communications planning strategy, to build and manage the execution of the annual communications and content plan. Partner closely with the V.P. of Marketing to align key messaging goals, messaging opportunities, measurement plan, and performance results. Develop detailed messaging strategies to support the marketing plan across all audiences and channels - both at an integrated campaign level as well as across individual channels, including web, app, email, push notifications, SMS, PR, social media, paid advertising, and partnerships. Ability to tailor communications to internal and external audiences (e.g., employees, key partners, customers, etc.) and create effective communications at key time periods. Work cross-functionally to inform brand PR / media opportunities and activation. Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leaders on employee communications, strategies, brand sentiment, and crisis situations. Cultivate and maintain relationships with external media, editors, and influencers to maximize our leadership position in the industry to increase brand awareness, drive customer acquisition, and brand affinity. Manages Public Relations account and writes press releases alongside PR agency. Oversees the snow reporting function while managing and leading a team of snow reporters. Other Functions: Support marketing and brand activation at key on and off-snow events Develops the JHMR press kit. Provides internal and external communications on all special events, improvements, misc. Hosts and assists visiting media/film crews. Travel support for ski shows and industry gatherings Attending cross-functional departmental meetings Supporting sales functions as needed Competencies: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with senior leadership, colleagues, peers and direct reports. Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills. A keen eye for copy and experience executing strategic storytelling is a must. Enthusiastic team player with the flexibility to re-prioritize, multi-task, and switch tasks fluidly. Self-motivated and takes initiative with an innovative mindset to drive new ideas and think outside of the box as an entrepreneurial leader. Strong project management abilities. Exceptionally organized with excellent attention to detail. Proactive and process-driven, with ability to think ahead to full scope of projects and deliver work on time and accurately. Valid driver's license. Supervisory Duties: Direct reports: 2 seasonal part time Work Environment: This job operates primarily in a clerical office setting. This role routinely uses computer and phone. Most work is completed in an indoor environment. Occasional outdoor environment participating in communications campaigns. Outdoor environment may cause exposure to extreme temperatures and varying weather. Physical Demands: Ability to sit for long periods of time at a desk and working on a computer. Occasional walking, moving about on foot to work with media partners and host communications campaigns. Extensive use of fingers to type and perform other computer work. Hearing and ability to give and receive detailed information through oral communication at normal speaking level both in person and over the phone. Close visual acuity such as preparing copy and reports. Ability to ski or snowboard on intermediate terrain Ability to drive a motor vehicle in varying weather conditions. Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: This job is year-round full time and typically works during daytime business hours; however, work may be required on evenings and weekends. Schedules and hours may fluctuate depending on business need. Required Education and Experience: High school or GED Bachelor's degree Minimum 3 years communication and PR experience Minimum 2 years experience with media relations and crisis communication. Preferred Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or related field. 5+ years of communications and PR experience in ski, resort, or outdoor recreation industry. Demonstrated experience and expertise in internal, external, and executive communications.
