Job Description

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an experienced Senior Process or Mechanical Engineer to enhance our capabilities in the Specialty Chemical and Consumer Products sectors. As an employee owner (EO), we support our clients in designing and executing impactful projects. This role involves developing process designs for chemically based production systems, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver comprehensive project solutions.

The Senior Process Engineer will lead mechanical design teams, oversee project development from conception through construction, and adapt processes to meet budget, design, and client needs.

Responsibilities

  1. Lead process design from conceptual to detailed engineering phases, including mass balance, PFDs, P&IDs, and general arrangements.
  2. Prepare process specifications, data sheets, RFQs, and bid summaries.
  3. Review vendor drawings and coordinate with suppliers and other disciplines.
  4. Apply industry standards, codes, and innovative solutions to complex projects.
  5. Manage project schedules, scope, budgets, and change orders.
  6. Assist in developing cost proposals and qualification documents.
  7. Review engineering drawings and construction administration activities.
  8. Conduct field inspections, measurements, and testing.
  9. Develop technical reports and client presentations.
  10. Build and maintain client relationships, participate in business development.
  11. Provide leadership and mentorship within the engineering team.
  12. Ensure QA/QC adherence and safety compliance.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or related, with 7+ years of process engineering experience; EPC experience preferred.
  • Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering with 6+ years of experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in process design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, PIP, NACE).
  • Strong computer skills, including process simulation software (HYSYS, Aspen, HTRI).
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Leadership experience in large project disciplines.
  • PE license preferred.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with mass and heat balances, PFDs, P&IDs, piping analysis, pressure relief sizing, vessel design, and continuous processing systems.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range: $155,000 - $240,000 annually, plus bonus. Extensive benefits include insurance, disability, wellness programs, ESOP, and 401(k).

Additional Details

Location: Wallingford, CT and Chicago, IL. Travel: 25%. Full-time employment. Open until filled.
