Duties and Responsibilities:
Instruction (45%):
Extension Instruction (25%)
- Provide extension leadership in wildland fire science and management for Hawai‘i and the U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands, supporting UH CTAHR Cooperative Extension Service in wildfire risk mitigation.
- Coordinate an extension program on wildfire risk reduction with various stakeholders including extension and research faculty, scientists, agencies, land managers, and the public.
- Develop extension materials, training modules, and decision support tools related to wildfires, such as social media content, websites, educational displays, FAQs, pamphlets, and posters, tailored to community and educational needs.
- Offer science-based management practices for pre-fire planning, risk assessment, mitigation, and post-fire land rehabilitation.
- Coordinate efforts across UH extension faculty on climate adaptation and hazard mitigation concerning wildfires.
- Secure internal and external grant funding for the extension program.
- Teach one or two undergraduate and/or graduate courses annually in relevant areas.
- Mentor students through committee participation, capstone projects, internships, guest lectures, and field trips.
- Conduct applied research on wildfire drivers, impacts, and management strategies, including climate change, urban-wildland interface, land use, ignition sources, and vegetation management.
- Publish peer-reviewed papers and technical reports.
- Assess stakeholder needs for wildfire information and training.
- Evaluate and report on program impacts and effectiveness.
- Secure research funding through grants.
- Advise graduate students in relevant programs.
- Participate in departmental, college, and university service activities.
- Contribute to professional societies through reviewing, editing, organizing, judging, and serving in leadership roles.
- Engage with the Hawai‘i community through policy and non-profit advisory roles or testimony.
- Ph.D. in fire science, vegetation management, ecology, geography, or natural resource management.
- Relevant academic or professional experience.
- At least one year of wildfire science and management experience.
- Excellent communication skills demonstrated via publications and presentations.
- Professionalism in collaboration and meetings.
- Four years of service as Assistant Professor or equivalent.
- Ability to develop and lead regional extension programs and work in multidisciplinary teams.
- Prior teaching experience at undergraduate or graduate levels.
- Successful grant writing and management record.
- Experience in tropical/subtropical/island ecology.
- Leadership in regional extension programs and multidisciplinary collaboration.
- Teaching experience at college level.
- Successful grant history.
- Experience integrating indigenous and contemporary science in resource management.
- Experience in Hawai‘i or U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands.
