The Integrative Prehistory and Archaeological Science (IPAS) at the University of Basel, together with the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Zurich, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in archaeozoology and isotope analysis, commencing October 2025. This position is part of the SNSF Weave/Lead Agency Project “Deciphering Lakeside Settlements” (grant number ), which aims to advance understanding of Neolithic lakeshore settlements in Switzerland through interdisciplinary research.
Key Responsibilities
– Conduct archaeozoological and isotope analysis of Neolithic lakeshore settlements in Switzerland.
– Analyze animal bone material using morphological and morphometric methods.
– Perform isotope analyses to investigate economic systems, supply networks, and human-environment interactions.
– Collaborate with researchers in archaeology, palynology, archaeobotany, ichtyoarchaeology, and sediment genetics.
– Publish research findings in peer-reviewed academic journals as part of PhD requirements.
Requirements
– Master’s degree in archaeozoology and/or archaeology.
– Strong background in archaeozoology, including experience in morphological identification of animal bones.
– Knowledge of isotope analysis and archaeometry is advantageous.
– Interest in wetland archaeology and Neolithic studies is desirable.
– Excellent academic record.
– Fluency in English (spoken and written); knowledge of German is an asset.
– Excellent communication skills.
– Research experience is beneficial but not mandatory.

– 3-year, 100% PhD position hosted by the IPAS, University of Basel.
