Description
The Nutrition Counselor is a paraprofessional who provides services to WIC clients, including health screening, basic nutrition education, and referrals for healthcare and other services. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities and reports to a designated higher-level staff member with CPA or higher credentials.
Qualifications
Minimum Education : High School Diploma or GED, 2 years of experience at a WIC clinic providing secondary nutrition to clients or groups, completed DC Health-required CPA training, and documentation skills. Alternatively, a Bachelor's Degree with 6 months of community nutrition or dietetic internship experience is preferred.
Minimum Work Experience : 2 years (Required); 1 year of counseling experience with a Bachelor's degree (Preferred).
Required Skills/Knowledge : Basic computer skills, ability to learn new technology, detail-oriented, excellent communication skills in English, customer service skills, and ability to work independently in a multicultural environment. Completion of WIC para-professional competency training is required upon hiring.
Functional Accountabilities
- Conduct interviews using assessment tools to gather health and dietary information.
- Educate participants about their rights, food systems, and WIC policies.
- Record measurements and biochemical data.
- Screen health and nutritional status, identify risks.
- Provide basic nutrition education and promote breastfeeding.
- Offer substance abuse and smoking cessation information.
- Make appropriate referrals and complete food prescriptions.
- Document all contacts in the DC WIC CARES system.
- Issue food benefits according to policy.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Position: Full-Time, Day Shift, 8am-4:30pm
Salary Range: $42,702.40 - $71,156.80
