Seattle Public Utilities' (SPU) Solid Waste Line of Business has an exciting opportunity for a
Term Limited Temporary (TLT) Organics, Natural Lawn Care, and Waste Prevention Planner
(Planning & Development Specialist II)
to support the implementation of new c ity and state organics management laws, the development and launch of a natural yard care campaign, and measuring progress towards
SPU's new waste prevention goals .
This Term Limited Temporary (TLT) opportunity is fully benefited, is expected to last
up to 24-months
and is open to all eligible and qualified candidates. Primary Responsibilities for this TLT Organics Natural Lawn Care and Waste Prevention Planner :
Oversee updates to City of Seattle specifications and purchasing guidelines to comply with Washington’s new Organics Management Laws , including identifying relevant publications and coordinating updates across City departments .
Update and/or develop systems and communications tools to support compliance with the new organics management requirements.
Manage the development and application of tools (e.g., surveys, case study designs, spreadsheets, maps, etc.) to establish baseline measurement s for SPU’s new waste prevention metrics, including overseeing consultant contracts , coordinating input from staff, collecting and analyzing data , and presenting findings .
Coordinate updates to communication tools (e.g., websites, publications, videos, etc.) related to natural yard care, the benefits of using compost, and waste prevention, including drafting content, collecting input from staff, and working with vendors that provide graphic design, videography, accessibility, and translation/transcreation services.
Engage with external agency partners to align messaging and leverage resources.

Experience :
Two (2) years of experience in planning and research related to land use, urban economics, human services, environmental issues, conservation or other work directly related to City planning and development work
Education : Bachelor's degree in Planning, Urban Design, Environmental Studies, Public Administration orrelated discipline. ( If no degree , an additional two (2) years of relevant experience is required) Combinations of appropriate education, training, certification, and experience(s) will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.
Desired Qualifications : N atural yard care / sustainable landscaping knowledge , and/or experience with municipal - scale organics management .
Demonstrated ability to successfully lead and deliver complex projects from initiation to completion .
Strong pro blem-solving and critical thinking skills .
Experience evaluating programs, including developing measurement strategies and t ools (e.g., surveys, focus groups, case studies, etc.) , collecting and analyzing data, and pres enting findings .
Skilled in communicating complex information clearly and concisely for multiple audiences using a variety of meth ods ( e.g. written, verbal, print brochures , web , and others ) .
Expertise in develop ing and implement ing effective strategies that advance equitable access and positive outcomes for diverse communities .
Experience coordinatin g across multipl e stakeholders .

The full salary range for this position is $47.54 per hour - $55.32 per hour.
Workplace Environment (*Telework Expectation) : This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. City employees will have the option to work remotely two days a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.
