The Program / Department / Team The Marketing team aims to support Mercy Corps’ strategic goals by raising funds, increasing visibility, and influencing public perception. Our team comprises diverse professionals including gift officers, fundraisers, web developers, marketers, media strategists, database managers, digital specialists, designers, and storytellers, all passionate about our mission. The Position The Social Media Coordinator is responsible for creating engaging content and stories for Mercy Corps' social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and X. The role focuses on identifying relevant narratives and crafting compelling copy to boost audience engagement and align with organizational priorities. Content Creation & Storytelling Research and develop content ideas, collaborating with the Director of Marketing Strategy to identify timely stories and trending topics relevant to current events and organizational goals. Generate concepts for social media content, especially around upcoming events like hurricane season, including presenting multiple story options with rationales. Write platform-specific, engaging copy for social posts, utilizing AI tools for brainstorming and applying editorial judgment for final content. Create and edit visual assets, including graphics and short videos, using tools like Canva (basic proficiency required), Adobe Creative Suite, or similar. Monitor trending topics and news cycles to find content opportunities that support Mercy Corps’ mission and programs. Collaborate with internal teams to source authentic stories from programs and field operations. Content Strategy & Channel Management Schedule and publish content using social media management tools like Sprout Social (basic proficiency required) or similar. Assist in developing and executing social media channel strategies in coordination with the Director of Marketing Strategy. Stay informed about emerging platforms, technologies, and industry best practices. Cross Team Support Manage social media requests supporting advocacy, partnerships, and thought leadership initiatives. Maintain social media assets in accessible, centralized locations for internal and external use. Community Engagement Monitor social channels, respond appropriately to comments, and escalate sensitive content as needed. Supervisory Responsibility None specified. Accountability Reports directly to the Director of Brand Marketing and works closely with graphic designers, video editors, photographers, and other marketing team members. Qualifications 1-3 years of relevant experience in marketing, communications, or PR. At least one year managing social media and creating content for a brand. Strong copywriting and storytelling skills tailored to different platforms. Proficiency with Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and social media management tools. Attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent communication skills and a positive, solution-oriented attitude. Interest in social media trends and humanitarian issues. Preferred Qualifications Proficiency with Sprout Social and Canva. Experience with AI content tools and human judgment in content creation.
