How would you like to use your data analytics and coding skills in high-tech applications helping California state government? The future happens first in California, so we need state-of-the-art analytics and data tools to plan for a complicated and dynamic energy system and embrace cleaner, more reliable, and affordable ways to grow our economy and protect our citizens. Under general direction of the Program and Project Supervisor and guidance of senior staff, the Junior Energy System Modeler will advise and assist high-level decision-makers such as Commissioners, Judges, and Energy Division management. The analyst will perform modeling to support implementation of Senate Bill No. 846 (SB 846) and Assembly Bill 2368 (AB 2368) by developing data and modeling scenarios for cost and reliability studies of the energy system. The analyst is a key member of a team working on major long-term projects and programs to protect reliability and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of California's energy system. The analyst will use existing models, develop models internally, and manage internal coordination on databases and data access to support the whole modeling team and the rest of the Energy Division. The analyst will assist in modeling to plan for investments that bolster the reliability of the electric and gas system. As demand increases due to electrification and the addition of data centers, the analyst will identify strategies and alternative scenarios to meet SB 846 and AB 2368 goals with various resource portfolios and operational solutions. The analyst will also perform the following tasks: Act as a project support and prepare written reports and analyses on economic, policy, and/or technical issues related to the state's integrated resource planning programs. Support complex regulatory proceedings and assist teams working on analytical projects related to these proceedings. Assist in performing or reviewing modeling and analysis to assess impacts of decarbonization and climate change on energy planning and determine optimal clean energy investments on the transmission and distribution system to meet state energy policy goals. Develop and promote energy reliability planning and procurement efforts in the Energy Division. Coordinate policies and investments with other state, tribal, and federal agencies to meet reliability goals. Write and edit reports with lead analysts, coordinate with other California organizations and agencies (e.g., California Energy Commission, California Air Resources Board, California Independent System Operator), and respond to outside inquiries.
