About the Role

The Accounting Manager reports directly to the Controller. The Accounting Manager will be responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. The Accounting Manager supervises a team of five and is responsible for managing the team to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation, financial reporting, and year-end audit preparation.

Job Responsibilities

  • Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.
  • Ensure an accurate and timely month end and year end close.
  • Ensure the timely reporting of all monthly financial information.
  • Oversee the daily banking requirements.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely processing accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.
  • Collaborates with the other finance department managers to support overall department goals and objectives.
  • Supervise the accounting team to ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met.
  • Handle personnel issues relating to staff conflicts, absenteeism, performance issues, etc.
  • Work with each direct report to establish goals and objectives for each year and monitor and advise on the progress to enhance the professional development of staff.
  • Develop proficiency in the use of sub ledger systems including Tessitura (fundraising), Sage (fixed assets), Artifacts (event services), and Counterpoint (retail sales).
  • Monitors and analyzes department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Advises staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.
  • Work with the Controller to ensure a clean and timely year end audit.
  • Assist in development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department.
  • Provide training to new and existing staff as needed.
  • Support Controller with special projects and workflow process improvements as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree with an emphasis in Accounting.
  • Candidate with 5 to 7 years or more experience in related functions.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, get and give information clearly and completely with individuals throughout the organization.
  • Strong interpersonal, supervisory and customer service skills.
  • Analytical skills and ability to be extremely detail oriented.
  • Strong commitment to detail, successful prioritization and time management skills.
  • Solid skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of GAAP.

Preferred

  • Not-for-profit accounting experience.
  • Strong Knowledge of MS Outlook and Office 365.
  • Experience with and adept at a variety of different accounting and fundraising systems, especially an Enterprise Resource System
  • Experience with new system design and implementation
  • Knowledge of best practices and ability and eagerness to design and apply such to current environment.
