Assistant Specimens Collector

This position supports the field collection of research organisms from local aquatic habitats and oversees the distribution and shipment of collected specimens. The role also contributes to the educational mission of the MBL by serving as a naturalist on RV Gemma class trips, providing MRC tank room tours to visiting researchers and students, and supports animal husbandry by assisting in the tank room and other aquatic facilities on campus to maintain specimens. Major duties include: Working in close collaboration with the Senior Collector to acquire knowledge, assist with daily collections, and help coordinate non-trawl field collection activities using various methods and equipment. Developing collection plans, executing field sampling, and ensuring collected species are maintained in optimal conditions for transport and research. Scheduling collections, managing collection logs, and coordinating distribution of specimens to resident and visiting scientists as well as executing external specimen shipping. Assisting in maintaining departmental inventory of gear and equipment and supporting maintenance and repairs of vessels and equipment. Supporting educational and outreach mission by acting as the naturalist aboard RV Gemma class trips captained by the Gemma captain and providing MRC tank room tours to visiting researchers and students. Serving as Mate aboard the RV Gemma for collections as needed. Maintaining small collection vessels, ensuring compliance with the Small Boat Management Program and Operations Manual. Performing other duties as assigned. Education/skills/experience: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Marine Science, or related field, or equivalent experience. In-depth knowledge of Cape Cod's coastal marine biodiversity and collection techniques. Familiarity with collecting gear, small boat operation ( Experience trailering small boats with trucks. Strong organizational skills with experience in data management and record keeping. Valid Massachusetts driver's license with a clean driving record. Completion of the Massachusetts Boating Safety course or Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels license required. Current Advanced First Aid/CPR certification. SCUBA or AAUS certification preferred. Physical requirements: Ability to work outdoors in various coastal environments, often under extreme conditions year-round. Capable of lifting up to 100 lbs, traversing uneven terrain, and working in challenging weather. Ability to stand on pitching platforms for extended periods.
