Position Summary

The Director of Legal Technology and Innovation will report directly to the Managing Director, Practice Client Services and Innovation and will work closely with IS leadership to drive the development, implementation, and adoption of transformative legal technologies across the firm’s global platform. This individual will align innovation initiatives with firmwide and departmental strategies, ensuring that technology enhances legal service delivery, operational efficiency, and client value directly in line with the firm and Information Services department strategies.

Duties And Responsibilities

Partner with leadership to define and execute a legal technology strategy aligned with business objectives. Direct pilot programs and proof-of-concepts to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of new technologies. Direct and drive collaboration with attorneys, relevant firm committees, and relevant leadership to understand practice-specific needs and align technology investments accordingly. Monitor relationships with legal technology vendors, ensuring the firm is leveraging the latest advancements in AI, document automation, legal research tools, and workflow automation. Ensure technology solutions support compliance, security, and ethical obligations in legal practice. Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of legal technologists and innovation professionals, Direct and enable the evaluation, selection, and implementation of legal technology solutions in collaboration with the appropriate leadership. Ensure successful adoption through systematic change management and stakeholder engagement programs. Act as a trusted advisor to partners and administrative leadership regarding the effective use of legal technology. Oversee the innovation team’s collaboration with attorneys when co-developing and co-designing internal and external-facing legal technology solutions. Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure cohesive execution of innovation initiatives. Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across all technology and client service teams. Work with other IS leadership to manage the budget for Legal Technology and Innovation, ensuring efficient allocation of resources. Evaluate the ROI of technology investments and make recommendations for future initiatives. Negotiate contracts with vendors and manage vendor relationships

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in business, computer science, communications, legal studies, or a related field required; an advanced degree (J.D., MBA, or MS) preferred. 10+ years of experience in legal technology, innovation, or legal operations within a law firm or a legal practice of a professional services environment required. 5+ years of experience in a leadership role with direct people management responsibilities required. Must live within a commutable distance to the firm office with the ability to come into the designated office 3-4 days per week.

COMPETENCIES

Significant experience in an AmLaw 50 or global law firm environment. Familiarity with agile methodologies and design thinking principles. Proven experience leading large-scale technology adoption and innovation initiatives. Strong data, AI and machine learning understanding, with the ability to convey those complex concepts to a wide variety of stakeholders. Ability to translate business objectives into actionable technology and change management strategies. Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage and influence senior leadership and attorneys. Demonstrated success in leading cross-functional teams and managing complex projects. Deep understanding of the legal technology landscape and best practices, including AI, automation, and workflow tools and services. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence at all levels. Experience managing budgets and vendor relationships. Experience with data governance, data science, and business intelligence. Experience leading change management initiatives. Demonstrated knowledge of security best practices. Proven ability to engage with and support senior partners and practice leaders. Legal Technology Acumen.

SALARY

Illinois based applicants only:

The target annual salary range for this role is currently $285,000 - $315,000 based on a regular, full-time schedule. The amount of compensation offered will be determined by several factors, including but not limited to experience, qualifications, market data and internal equity. Total compensation includes a comprehensive healthcare benefits package, yearly retirement contribution, and may include an annual discretionary merit bonus.
