For over 50 years, SBY has led innovative efforts to end youth homelessness. Today, our programs in Washington, DC, and Prince George’s County, MD, reach more than 6,500 runaway, homeless, abused, and neglected youth and their families annually.
Position Summary: Domestic Violence Counselor
The Domestic Violence Counselor provides trauma-informed individual and group therapy to young adult survivors of domestic violence across Sasha Bruce Youthwork’s (SBY) programs. This position rotates across multiple sites and works closely with case managers and program teams to ensure early identification, safety planning, and coordinated care for survivors. The Counselor also plays a key role in strengthening internal processes and building staff capacity to respond effectively to domestic violence.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide trauma-informed individual and group therapy to survivors of domestic violence and, when appropriate, their children.
  • Conduct clinical assessments, develop treatment plans, and create and revise safety plans in collaboration with youth and program staff.
  • Deliver on-site crisis intervention, de-escalation, and stabilization support to clients as needed.
  • Facilitate psychoeducation and skill-building groups on topics including healthy relationships, co-parenting, consent, safe sex, conflict resolution, and communication skills.
  • Assist clients in accessing legal advocacy, protective orders, and other survivor-centered resources; serve as a trusted advocate as clients navigate complex systems.
  • Assess eligibility for community-based services and coordinate referrals to external providers.
  • Collaborate with families, case managers, schools, law enforcement, emergency services, and other community partners to ensure comprehensive care aligned with each client’s treatment and safety plans.
  • Maintain and strengthen collaborative relationships with domestic violence service providers across the region.
  • In collaboration with Director of Clinical Care, deliver training and ongoing support to program staff to deepen understanding of domestic violence dynamics and promote early identification and trauma-informed intervention.
  • In collaboration with Director of Clinical Care, develop and implement an enhanced DV screening protocol for case managers at programs to ensure all SBY clients are screened for DV and provided appropriate support.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute clinical insight to care planning.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical documentation in compliance with SBY policies and funder requirements.
  • Collect and report data related to client progress and program outcomes as required by SBY and funders.
  • Participate in weekly clinical supervision with the Director of Clinical Care.
  • Complete and maintain certification in a 40-hour Domestic Violence Counselor Training program annually.
  • Participate in internal and external trainings, conferences, and community outreach events as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Clinical Care or designee.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or a related field.
  • Licensure to practice in Washington, DC, independently or under supervision (LGSW, LICSW, LGPC, LPC).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of domestic violence, trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, and safety planning.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Flexibility to travel between sites across DC; availability to work occasional evenings or weekends to meet client needs.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practice.
Additional Information
This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits. Clinical supervision toward independent licensure will be provided. Some evening hours may be required to accommodate client schedules.
If an offer is extended, the candidate will be required to successfully complete a criminal background check, FBI fingerprinting, and any additional screenings required by funders or licensing bodies.
