Academic Advisor II - Department Of Communication And Journalism

The College of Arts and Sciences is looking for an Academic Advisor II that will be responsible for fostering meaningful student engagement and empowering individuals to realize their academic and professional aspirations in the Department of Communication and Journalism. This role is instrumental in enhancing undergraduate retention by cultivating strong student relationships and providing clear, strategic guidance on academic policies, procedures, and program-specific requirements. Opportunities to Contribute: Advise students: Collaborate with students to understand and develop realistic and attainable educational and academic goals. Provide input on related majors, minors, future education, and career options that best align with their goals. Educate, prepare, and assist students with the full array of academic processes by sharing university and college policies, program requirements, transfer credit decisions, etc. Counsel students regarding core and degree course selection and implication of selected courses and/or exception requests. Provide input on probationary decisions. Create and maintain updated relevant records and notes. Deliver Student Success and Retention Strategies: Consistently engage student population by utilizing various outreach methods to keep students informed of critical and relevant personal, academic and professional topics. Proactively share available academic, professional, and health and wellness resources such as the Academic Success Center, Career Center, Student Organizations, Counseling & Psychological Services, and Disability Resources. Actively monitor students' progress through the program by reviewing and assessing academic records. Lead the planning and/or delivery of various department related advising, student success, retention events and academic campaigns. Assess individual students' stage of academic development and promote their growth by determining suitable developmental tasks. Team Building and Support: Assist in the training of new staff members and student workers within the academic advising department. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree. Two years of related experience. A well-qualified candidate may also possess: Bachelor's degree in Communication, Journalism, or a related field. Additional education in higher education, student affairs, or counseling. Experience reviewing degree programs, curriculum changes, and institutional requirements. Previous experience in advising, recruiting, teaching, counseling, Student Affairs, or work within a higher education academic environment. Knowledge of student information systems, degree planning/audit tools, and advising platforms. Ability to explain curriculum or degree plan changes. Texas A&M University advising experience to include familiarity with systems such as Compass or Howdy. Knowledge of campus and community resources that support student success. Prior experience within project management. Experience in mental health referrals, respectful communication, student decision-making, risk identification Ability to build relationships, mentor students, and set goals. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and virtual meeting tools (e.g., Zoom, Teams). Participation within the NACADA or TEXAAN conferences. Salary: $49,500.00
