Position Details
- Title: Director of R&D
- Schedule: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, M-F, with some flexibility. *This position is ONSITE in an office/lab setting.
- Ideal Candidates: The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years in a Research & Development leadership role within specialty chemicals, cosmetics, medical devices, or similar industries.

- Salary Range: $180,000 - $225,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.

Position Overview
The Director of Research and Development will play a pivotal part in driving innovation and advancing the commercialization of specialty polymers and chemicals, specifically for the cosmetic and medical device sectors. Their responsibilities will span several key technical areas and will demand expertise in UV and acrylic coatings, formulation and testing of 3D-printed resins, plastics processing, pigmentation technologies, and compliance with regulatory standards (EU, US FDA, and USP). The Director will also oversee a team of researchers, ensuring projects are executed efficiently and in alignment with the company's strategic goals.
Job Functions
- Develop and implement the R&D strategy, prioritizing innovation, regulatory compliance, and sustainability.
- Lead and manage a team across multiple sites, providing guidance, training, mentorship, and support. Set performance goals, conduct regular performance evaluations, and foster a high-performance culture and a positive and collaborative team environment.
- Current direct reports are managerial and senior level scientists and engineers with upwards 10 years’ technical experience. Several possess and/or are pursuing advanced technical degrees.
- Align R&D activities with commercial objectives, including market trends and client requirements.
- Lead team functions that:
- Oversee project portfolios, timelines, and budgets, ensuring timely delivery of results.
- Lead formulation, testing, and optimization of UV-curable and acrylic coatings for cosmetic and specialty applications.
- Develop 3D-printed resins for medical devices and other applications using DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology.
- Drive advancements in plastics processing and testing, including injection molding, extrusion, and rheological performance evaluations.
- Innovate in the pigmentation of products, ensuring precision and stability in color matching. Ensure all products comply with EU (REACH, Cosmetics Regulation), US FDA (21 CFR Parts 170-199), and USP monographs for drug manufacturing.
- Develop robust testing and validation protocols for regulatory submissions.
- Partner with Quality Assurance teams to maintain product integrity and compliance across global markets.
- Design and test formulations for drug delivery systems adhering to USP by monographs.
- Act as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies, ensuring timely product approvals.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Sales, Marketing, Manufacturing, and Quality, to ensure market readiness of R&D outputs.
- Provide technical insights to clients and represent the company at industry events, conferences, and regulatory forums.
- Identify areas for process improvement and oversee implementation.
- Ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in drug product development.
- Perform additional duties/tasks as needed or requested by management.
- Minimum of 10 years in R&D leadership within specialty chemicals, cosmetics, medical devices, or related industries.
- Proven expertise in:
- UV-curable and acrylic coatings formulation and testing.
- Developing and testing 3D-printed resins for medical and specialty applications (DLP).
- Plastics processing and testing procedures, including rheology, mechanical properties, and thermal analysis.
- Pigmentation technologies for cosmetic and medical products.
- Regulatory compliance with EU, FDA, and USP monographs.
- Track record of successful commercialization of new products.
- Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills – ability to interface and communicate at all levels internally and externally.
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and adapt strategies in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to lead, motivate and develop a team.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite applications.
- Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, or a related field
- Complies with all safety regulations; maintains a safe work environment at all times.
- Adheres to always wearing the proper PPE/Safety equipment.
- Understands and complies with all written safety, health, and environmental procedures.
- Attends all required scheduled Health, Safety and Environmental training sessions.
- Participates in required Health, Safety and Environmental initiatives and programs.
- Perform required administrative functions related to Health, Safety and Environmental functions such as completing forms, checklists, and log sheets.

- Physical Demands: Employee is required to walk; stand; sit; use hands and fingers to manipulate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms to operate a computer, office equipment, and various laboratory equipment while performing laboratory work; and occasionally lift/move up to 25 lbs. Minimal need to balance, stoop, bend, kneel or climb.
- Work Environment: This position is located in an office setting, within a manufacturing facility. Noise intensity level: quiet to low. Employees will frequently need to enter lab and manufacturing areas, which may include exposure to moderate noise, moving equipment, and hazardous contaminants. Additionally, employees may be exposed to light fumes or airborne particles. When entering these areas, employees must adhere to all applicable safety protocols, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. Occasional travel may be required for audits, inspections, external site visits, or industry conferences.
