Job Description Summary & Additional Information Organizational Summary Statement The A. James Clark School of Engineering is seeking a dynamic, hands-on leader to spearhead the operations of the new Terrapin Works satellite center of Technical Operations located at the Village of Mondawmin in Baltimore as follows: - The Makerspace Manager will be responsible for Terrapin Works’ equipment and for developing, documenting, and optimizing standard operating procedures within the Touch Point Makerspace. - The Makerspace Manager will be responsible for safety procedures and maintenance schedules. - The Makerspace Manager will be an expert user or have the ability and desire to become one on all additive and subtractive equipment within the Touch Point Makerspace. - The Makerspace Manager will hire, train, schedule, mentor and qualify lab coordinators, other managers, student employees, and expert users on various systems. - The Makerspace Manager will supervise a staff of approximately 3 student staff. - The Makerspace Manager will optimize Center Operations by creating internal projects and by evaluating and implementing software solutions to ensure efficient work flow. - The Makerspace Manager will oversee the identification and implementation of workshop / information session curriculum that can be deployed within Terrapin Works and shared with partner Makerspaces across campus. - The Makerspace Manager will oversee the creation and validation of general makerspace standard operating procedures and safety programs by working with regulatory bodies such as Environmental Safety (ESSR) and the Fire Marshal’s office. - The Makerspace Manager will oversee creating assets and resources for other makerspaces on campus. - Participate in the leadership and promotion of Terrapin Works as well as the campus and national maker movement. The A. Preferences -Breadth in skills and/or experience across multiple disciplines of additive and subtractive manufacturing engineering is strongly desired. - Previous experience with, and knowledge of, FDM, laser cutting, and basic electronics is strongly desired. - Process development, prototyping, and/or other relevant design experience. - Strong oral and written communication skills. - Strong interpersonal and leadership skills. - Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team. -Ability to execute multiple projects, meet scheduled milestones, and meet deliverables on time with high quality outputs. - Experience in technical writing, specifically onboarding, standard operating procedures, and safety plans. - Five years of experience managing multidisciplinary teams in different locations. Licenses/Certifications NA Physical Demands - Ability to lift, transport, install and manage various equipment weighing 50 lbs or more - Frequently work near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to toxic or non-toxic chemicals - Noise level in the work environment is usually loud. - Work is conducted near electrical circuits; use of measuring instruments on live electrical circuits requires dexterity and caution. - Ability to use computer and communicate with customers and staff and others Required Application Materials: Cover letter, resume and a list of references Best Consideration Date: 6/10/2025 Posting Close Date: N/A Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: Three (3) years of experience operating and maintaining fabrication equipment, such as that used in subtractive or additive manufacturing (e.g., woodworking, metalworking, machining, or digital fabrication tools). Two (2) years of experience supervising or managing professional staff, including providing guidance, training, and performance management. Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of classic machine shop equipment, including bandsaws, mills, lathes, and CNC machines. Knowledge of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), laser cutting techniques, and basic electronics. Knowledge of additive and subtractive manufacturing engineering across multiple disciplines. Ability to become an expert user, or demonstrated expertise, in operating all additive and subtractive manufacturing equipment, including woodworking tools. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in using Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Skill in building strong interpersonal relationships and demonstrating leadership in collaborative settings. Ability to manage and execute multiple projects simultaneously, meet scheduled milestones, deliver high-quality outputs, and collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams.
