Job Purpose
Lightera is seeking a Director – Global Manufacturing Execution Systems to lead an enterprise-wide standardization program and manage ongoing operational practices using modern MES and HMI/SCADA capabilities to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in manufacturing operations, Industry 4.0 practices, and control systems leveraging technologies such as Tulip MES, Inductive Automation Ignition, HiveMQ (MQTT), OPC UA, and IIOT.
What will you do?
Work with Engineering and Manufacturing leaders to lead the MES standardization and modernization initiative at Lightera, ensuring it aligns with business goals. Lead the MES blueprint and requirements phase, ensuring alignment with external architecture efforts and internal business priorities. Collaborate with Data Management engineers to create data architectures that improve analytics, collaboration, and decision-making. Implement modern MES and HMI/SCADA platforms to standardize, simplify, and maintain factory systems, focusing on operational efficiency and effectiveness. Develop and implement a strategy for incorporating automation technologies into our processes. Recommend technology adoption based on feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and strategic fit. Promote collaboration between manufacturing teams to integrate automation principles seamlessly. Facilitate communication for a unified approach to automation projects and inspire the adoption of new solutions. Anticipate and address challenges related to automation integration. Support the assessment of Operational Technology risks and Automation Maturity. Create metrics and KPIs to monitor the success and impact of automation efforts. Regularly assess efficiency gains, quality improvements, and cost savings from automation initiatives. Work closely with Finance to ensure costing, variances, WIP, and scrap are tracked based on accurate and trustworthy shop floor data. Stay updated with industry trends and advancements in digital business solutions, incorporating best practices into operations. Provide guidance, mentorship, and coaching to team members, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning. Manage relationships with third-party vendors, consultants, and service providers, negotiating contracts, monitoring performance, and ensuring adherence to service level agreements.
What do you need to know?
Strong knowledge and enthusiasm for real-time process control and data-driven operations. Skilled in designing user interfaces for complex equipment and systems. Experience deploying MES in multi-site environments, including pilot execution, phased rollout, and vendor coordination. Familiar with Industrial IoT architectures, protocols, and standards like MQTT, Sparkplug B, and MODBUS. Knowledgeable about edge computing platforms and cloud-based IoT services (e.g., AWS IoT, Azure IoT Hub). Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration and decision-making. Proven experience in project management, vendor management, budget planning, and resource allocation. Hands-on experience with modern server hardware and mission-critical applications. Expertise in Tulip MES, Ignition (MES, SCADA, scripting), HiveMQ (MQTT), TimescaleDB, or similar technologies. Proficient in HTML, CSS, and Java for UI development. Strong grasp of MQTT, OPC UA, or Modbus protocols.
Critical Experience & Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, IT, Engineering, or related field. Master's degree preferred. 10+ years of experience in manufacturing automation and transformation, with global team leadership preferred. Extensive knowledge of SAP, JDE, and/or Oracle EBS ERP systems. In-depth knowledge of automation technologies like robotics, mechatronics, AI, IoT, and vision systems in manufacturing and design. Proven skills in cost analysis, process design, and integrating these for cost-effective results. Excellent program and project management skills. Strong presentation and communication skills for conveying ideas to non-engineer team members and leadership. Leadership experience engaging global teams, driving cross-regional collaboration, and aligning across diverse cultural contexts.
