Hours: First shift, Monday through Friday, general business hours. Forty (40) hours per week. Evening and weekend if necessary. | No Supervisory Responsibilities | Minimal Travel | Pay commensurate with experience

JOB SUMMARY: The Financial Counselor Lead provides financial guidance and support to patients regarding medical bills, insurance coverage, and payment options. This role serves as a technical lead for Financial Counselors and Cashiers, ensuring consistent and accurate financial practices. The Lead supports patient engagement initiatives, including Medicaid Presumptive Eligibility and third-party self-pay financing, and charity care programs while promoting positive patient experience and maintaining compliance with hospital policies.

Minimum Job Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or GED required. Post-secondary coursework in insurance billing or medical terminology preferred. Cash management training is preferred.

Experience: 1 year of experience in computerized third-party billing preferred. 2 years of hospital business office experience preferred. Experience with Meditech and revenue cycle systems (e.g., SSI) preferred. Knowledge of third-party billing requirements required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Verify insurance eligibility and estimate patient financial responsibility. Secure payment arrangements and resolve patient accounts efficiently. Collaborate with hospital departments, DSS, and external agencies for billing and coverage. Manage delinquent accounts, including coordination with collection agencies. Investigate and resolve outstanding balances through third-party payor contact. Assist patients with denials, appeals, and financial assistance options. Process charity care applications, estate claims, and bankruptcies. Post payments and provide backup support to the cashier. Stay current on billing regulations (Medicare, Medicaid, HMO/PPO). Lead technical guidance for Financial Counselors and Cashiers. Lead new program initiatives and ensure compliance and accuracy. Oversee patient experience for Medicaid Presumptive Eligibility program. Coordinate patient engagement with third-party self-pay financing vendors. Promote teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement. Maintains confidentiality. Supports the facilities and physician practices and promotes a positive attitude. Adheres to the dress code, appearance is neat and clean and wears appropriate identification while on duty. Adheres to the HIPAA and privacy policies and procedures. Reports any violation or appearance of violation of the policies and procedures and/or laws and regulations addressed in the Compliance Plan and the hospital Code of Conduct to the Compliance Officer, a member of Senior Leadership, or to the Department Director.

Must be willing to receive all required vaccinations (i.e., flu shot, etc.).
