Food Ingredient Buyer
Location Boston, MA Job Type Direct Hire (On-site) Compensation $85,000 – $95,000/year + 13% Bonus + Full Benefits Relocation Yes Experience Required 3–8 years (Food Manufacturing experience required) Education Required Bachelor’s in Business, Math, Supply Chain, or equivalent experience
Summary The Food Ingredient Buyer is responsible for managing the procurement and inventory of raw materials necessary for the production of finished goods at their assigned manufacturing facility. This role requires strong organizational, analytical, and negotiation skills, with a preference for candidates experienced in food commodity purchasing. Key Responsibilities
Oversee the timely replenishment of raw materials from multiple vendors, accounting for lead times, storage capacities, and shelf life. Ensure accurate pricing of materials, including freight, and pursue cost-saving opportunities. Serve as liaison between internal teams and vendors to resolve issues, returns, reimbursements, and expected credits. Partner with QA during audits and collaborate with R D on new ingredient sourcing. Proactively address material shortages that could impact production; be on-call as needed. Coordinate material transfers between facilities as formulations or production changes. Work with Logistics to manage freight and backhaul opportunities with the packaging team. Resolve invoice discrepancies using DocuWare. Provide cross-coverage for other buyers as needed. Generate and submit weekly supply variance reports and make adjustments as necessary. Monitor and address short shelf-life or dead inventory issues. Lead quarterly inventory counts and reconciliation. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Mathematics, Supply Chain, or a related field preferred—or equivalent experience. 3–5 years of experience in raw material or ingredient purchasing. Strong Microsoft Excel and Word skills. Experience in vendor negotiation and food industry/commodity buying. Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and ability to collaborate with departments and external vendors.
