Job Description Summary
The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) role is a field-based, customer-facing, non-promotional medical and scientific position. The MSL’s key objective is to create impact by advancing clinical practice within the assigned territory, leading to improved patient outcomes. The MSL must demonstrate deep therapeutic expertise, understand territory and market influences, engage scientifically with Healthcare Providers (HCPs) and medical experts, manage and develop their territory, and execute all relevant activities in alignment with the medical strategic and tactical plan—while functioning within the Novartis Code of Conduct, Ethics/Compliance policies, and Working Practice documents. The MSL will inform and shape medical strategy through a curious mindset to collect impactful and actionable insights, understanding their potential strategic impact.
This territory covers New England, including E. NY state, NH, VT, ME, and Western MA. Candidates must reside within 50 miles of the territory border; relocation is not available.
Role Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
The MSL will leverage scientific expertise and market knowledge to establish and build professional relationships with HCPs (including community physicians, pharmacists, medical experts, nurses, and other healthcare professionals) and thought leaders in the geographical area, aligned with medical strategy.
The primary responsibility is to engage with customers through activities such as emerging data discussions, clinical trial activities, uncovering barriers in the patient journey, understanding market dynamics, exploring unmet medical needs, pipeline discussions, education on disease states and products, capturing adverse events, and gathering medical insights throughout the product lifecycle.
Must demonstrate strategic territory vision and ensure appropriate identification, mapping, and planning of Medical Engagements (MEs) and Key Accounts in collaboration with internal colleagues, including:
Identifying key stakeholders influencing the patient journey and disease space throughout the product development lifecycle.
Identifying partnership opportunities with academic centers, centers of excellence, and systems of care to drive impact.
Identifying opportunities to involve HCPs or MEs when specific medical needs are identified.
Collaborating with other Novartis stakeholders to advance therapeutic area, clinical, or product goals.
Providing clinical trial support for company-sponsored trials and working cross-functionally with Medical Affairs and Clinical Operations.
Collaborating effectively with internal teams (e.g., HEOR, access, marketing, sales) to promote clinical practice while maintaining customer centricity and compliance.
Maintaining in-depth knowledge of the therapeutic area and Novartis products to serve as a medical resource.
Staying informed about internal policies and external regulations affecting responsibilities.
Executing administrative responsibilities and training (e.g., CRM updates, compliance modules) promptly.
Championing emerging responsibilities as priorities evolve.
Proactively pursuing personal and professional development.
The pay range at commencement is approximately $166,400 - $249,600 for Managers and $183,200 - $274,800 for ADs, with potential for bonuses and benefits. Final salary depends on various factors including experience and location. The position is at-will, with possible adjustments in compensation.
Job Requirements
Graduate degree in science or healthcare; doctoral preferred (MD, PhD, DNP, PharmD, etc.)
Experience requirements vary by level:
Manager: 0-3 years in a Field Medical role or 3-5 years in medical affairs/clinical research.
AD: Minimum 3 years in a Field Medical role or 5-7 years in medical affairs/clinical research.
Strong clinical knowledge, including pharmacotherapy, treatment guidelines, clinical research, and FDA regulations.
Work within applicable laws, regulations, and company policies.
Field-based role covering New England; residence within 50 miles of the territory border required.
Approximately 60-70% travel expected.
