CLASSIFICATION: This is a full-time, exempt (salaried) position. Eligible for a comprehensive benefits package including health and life insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, paid time off (vacation, sick and 11 holidays), and complimentary tickets to Playhouse performances
COMPENSATION: $68.640 annually
SCHEDULE: Some nights and weekends required.

About La Jolla Playhouse
La Jolla Playhouse is a place where artists and audiences come together to create what’s new and next in the American theatre, from Tony Award-winning productions, to imaginative programs for young audiences, to interactive experiences outside our theatre walls. Founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer, the Playhouse is currently led by Tony Award winner Christopher Ashley, the Rich Family Artistic Director of La Jolla Playhouse, and Managing Director Debby Buchholz. The Playhouse is internationally renowned for the development of new plays and musicals, including mounting 120 world premieres, commissioning more than 70 new works, and sending 36 productions to Broadway, garnering a total of 42 Tony Awards, as well as the 1993 Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre.

Employment Opportunitiesabout The Position
As the Learning and Engagement Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting the Learning and Engagement (L+E) Department. You will work in tandem with the Director of Learning and Engagement to provide curriculum development, administrative office and event support and facilitate programming including leading the paid internship program and teen council.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Program Administration & Support
Provide administrative and curriculum support for programs including Jumpstart Theatre, InSchool Residencies, Level Up, Conservatory, Tech Theatre, Spotlight On, and other assigned initiatives. Support engagement programs such as Voices of Our City Theater Workshop and MVP Initiatives. Serve as point of contact for schools, students, parents, and registrants. Track program registration and payments; create flyers and digital forms (e.g., Formstack). Coordinate with teaching artists on scheduling, contracts, and feedback in collaboration with the Director of Learning.
Data & Reporting
Manage data collection for 25+ programs, including census and testimonial documentation. Prepare impact reports for development and grantwriting purposes.
Human Resources & Payroll
Handle HR processes for department staff (onboarding, terminations, Livescan, TB testing). Serve as backup for weekly timesheet collection and payroll processing.
Accessibility Programming
Coordinate ASL, audio description, closed captioning, and other access services. Maintain current knowledge of accessibility best practices. Liaise with service providers and production teams to fulfill technical and content needs.
POP Tour Management
Oversee outreach and booking for the annual POP Tour (school/community performances). Coordinate logistics including performance site reports, schedules, and curriculum development. Manage local casting and collaborate with General Management on union requirements.
Student Matinees
Assist with the scheduling and administration of student matinee performances and workshops. Support curriculum development and communication with participating schools. Collaborate with production on educational guides and materials.
Internship Program Oversight
Supervise the Learning & Engagement intern and manage intern payroll. Manage the intern application process. Coordinate onboarding, training, and seminar scheduling for all interns. Maintain strong relationships with community colleges and manage intern recruitment. Host intern events, conduct exit interviews, and support alumni engagement.
Audience Engagement
Lead postshow talkbacks and Discovery Sunday programming with community partners. Guide backstage tours and support observership programs. Contribute to lobby activations, podcasts, and other audience engagement initiatives.
Teen Council (PTC) Management
Facilitate annual application and selection process. Lead bimonthly meetings and provide mentorship for council members. Support studentled initiatives and programming including Teen Nights and creative team projects.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with general administrative and at least 45 years organizational work experience Knowledge of, experience in, and strong passion for theater. Knowledge of, experience in, K12 Education standards, classroom management, and pedagogy Ability to lead and manage a learning environment Excellent writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills. Attention to detail and organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work independently. Ability to interact effectively and professionally with a wide variety of people. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel). Passion for the arts, especially theatre, and working with adult and youth learners in our community. Alignment with and commitment to the mission and values of La Jolla Playhouse.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bilingual (English/Spanish) Experience with Tessitura Familiarity with accessibility services
WORKING CONDITIONS
Regular, predictable attendance required. Availability to work nights and weekends as needed. Normal office working conditions: sitting at a desk, typing and computer work. Frequently sits or stands for long periods. Frequently picks up and moves items weighing up to 20 lbs.
