The emerging pathogen Medical Technologist performs high-level laboratory work and advanced molecular testing to help diagnose diseases, track outbreaks, and support public health investigations. This includes using whole genome sequencing to find unknown or emerging pathogens, and running targeted tests like antibody/antigen testing, RT-PCR for detecting RNA viruses, and meticulous sequence typing to identify specific strains. These methods are key to accurate diagnosis and effective public health response. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Evaluate the suitability of specimens for analysis, requesting new specimens if necessary. Prepare specimens for analysis, maintaining the physiologic state of the specimen properties. Select, perform, evaluate, and monitor test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques per protocols. Recognize and react to indicators of malfunction; locate and implement corrections. Conduct quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products, maintaining proper records. Calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain instruments. Verify correct instrument operation and perform troubleshooting as needed. Identify causes of common problems and make simple repairs. Evaluate data validity and correlate with patient data to verify results. Perform additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal results. Report abnormal results requiring immediate attention. Generate and verify laboratory results in the system. Provide expert advice on molecular assays and troubleshoot complex issues. Perform validations of new methods and evaluate test performance. Design workflows considering safety, equipment, reagents, and reporting. Advise on test appropriateness and alternative testing methods. Identify training needs for laboratory staff. Work Schedule

Shift 1: 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday Shift 2: 8am-5pm, Tuesday-Saturday Qualifications

Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by ASCP-BOR. B.S. in Biological Sciences or related field. 2-5 years of laboratory experience, especially with molecular assays. Knowledge of laboratory equipment and troubleshooting skills. Experience with VA Laboratory Information Management (LIM) systems. Legal eligibility to work in the US and pass background screening. Pay Range

$45.00 - $50.00 per hour, approximately $93,600 - $104,000 annually. Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Work involves exposure to infectious agents, chemicals, and high-containment laboratories, requiring strict biosafety protocols and PPE. Physical demands include standing, manual dexterity, visual acuity, and ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Benefits
