Base pay range

$100,000.00/yr - $181,000.00/yr

The Legal Counsel will provide legal advice and support across a broad range of subject matters related to the operations of institutions participating in federal student aid programs. This role requires a versatile legal professional with strong interpersonal skills, initiative, and the ability to independently manage diverse legal needs for both educational institutions and central administrative functions. The position reports to a senior legal leader responsible for higher education regulatory and compliance matters within the organization’s legal department.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal support to multiple institutions of higher education located in the U.S. and internationally.
• Collaborate with institutional departments to deliver legal research, analysis, and writing; review and negotiate domestic and international agreements, including clinical affiliation and strategic partnership contracts.
• Advise on student-related matters such as conduct, academic integrity, records, disability accommodations, academic policy compliance, and pre-litigation issues.
• Draft, review, and respond to complaints from students received through external agencies or private counsel.
• Address compliance with privacy regulations, including subpoena responses and matters related to student education records.
• Counsel on issues relating to academic research, institutional agreements, regulatory compliance, and other legal concerns impacting academic programs, particularly in healthcare and veterinary fields, including those associated with for-profit institutions.
• Review and develop policies and procedures that align with institutional goals and risk management strategies; advise on updates as needed.
• Partner with business units to implement and improve legal and compliance best practices.
• Design and deliver training programs on relevant legal topics.

Qualifications

To perform this role successfully, an individual must be able to meet each of the following requirements. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for qualified individuals with disabilities.

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
• Active license in good standing to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction, with Illinois preferred.
• Minimum of 7 years’ experience practicing law, with experience in a law firm and/or in-house legal department.
• Demonstrated experience negotiating commercial contracts, particularly those involving IT and consulting services.
• Background in litigation and experience advising on consumer protection laws.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess legal risks and business opportunities.
• Excellent research, writing, negotiation, and organizational abilities.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with clients across all organizational levels.
• Self-motivated with strong judgment and the ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
• High level of professionalism, strong work ethic, and ability to balance multiple priorities.
