The Opportunity

Cowen Partners Executive Search has been retained to recruit a seasoned Chief Credit Officer (CCO) .

The CCO will provide strategic leadership in formulating and executing credit policies, overseeing loan portfolio performance, and managing enterprise credit risk. This executive will play a key role in credit decision-making, ensuring the bank’s lending practices balance growth with sound risk management, while offering expert guidance to the CEO and Chief Risk Officer.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and oversee credit policies, procedures, and lending standards.
• Lead credit decision-making processes, ensuring alignment with regulatory guidelines and strategic objectives.
• Provide oversight of the loan portfolio, identifying risks, opportunities, and emerging trends.
• Partner with the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Risk Officer, and other executives to guide strategic initiatives and growth.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, internal risk management frameworks, and credit administration best practices.
• Mentor and lead credit and lending teams to foster a high-performance culture.
• Present regularly to the Board of Directors on credit portfolio performance, risk trends, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field; MBA strongly preferred .
• At least 15+ years of increasingly diverse and complex experience in credit administration at a commercial bank.
• Proven track record serving in senior credit supervision positions .
• Significant experience in both consumer and commercial credit environments preferred.
• Demonstrated success in recruiting, developing, and managing underwriters and portfolio managers .
• Strong understanding of the NY/Tri-State region , particularly CRE and C&I industry verticals .
• Deep knowledge of credit and regulatory reporting requirements .
• Ability to form effective relationships and achieve influence at the executive and regulatory level .
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to articulate the case for sound credit practices in clear business terms.
• Established financial and credit acumen , with the ability to interpret complex business and regulatory requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to make robust, tough decisions and to work cross-functionally to understand interdependencies across the organization.
• Proven ability to prioritize competing demands in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to identify and assess credit and risk trends , both internally and externally.
• Experience in presenting to and working with Boards of Directors .
