Qualifications:
College hours, high school diploma or GED (preferred)
Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements
School Bus Driver Certification or able to obtain with six months of hire date
Professional certification in vehicle repair; ASE certification (preferred)
Five years mechanical experience in vehicle repair and/or other related experience
Able to understand and execute verbal and written orders and to work productively without continual supervision
Formal training in vehicle repair (preferred)
Pass annual physical in accordance with state law
Negative result on drug and/or alcohol tests administered as pre-employment, random, post-accident and/or reasonable suspicion basis, in accordance with federal law and district policy
Able to read and interpret maps and routes
Able to climb in and out of all school bus emergency exits
Proficient in the use of personal computer (preferred)
Tools of the trade to be provided by employee
Primary Purpose:
Make mechanical repairs to the district's fleet while providing support in the daily requirements of the transportation department. Safely drive students to and from school on a schedule assigned by the Transportation Department. Safely transport students and staff to and from district sanctioned activities. Always act in the best interest of the district, the students and the community.
Major Duties and Responsibilities: Able to diagnose mechanical and electrical air conditioning problems and effect repair. Overhaul engines (gasoline and diesel), transmissions, brakes (mechanical and air), front ends and rear ends. Able to remove, repair starters, alternators, carburetors, fuel pumps, injectors, etc. Tune and analyze engines, i.e., proficient in the use of exhaust and engine analyzers. Responsible for the upkeep, repair, replacement and protection of personal tools. Certain large tools and equipment are supplied by the district. Operate any Katy ISD school bus and related equipment in a safe and efficient manner while following all traffic laws, district policies, district regulations and Transportation Department regulations. Maintain proficiency with upgraded fleet vehicles. After-hours and weekend work may be necessary. Other duties as assigned.
Equipment Used:
Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drills, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jacks and lift equipment. School bus and district vehicles, two-way radios and telephones. School buses, emergency equipment (triangle reflectors, fire extinguisher, bodily fluids kit, etc.)
Working Conditions:
Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Work outside and inside, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts. Exposed to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel. Prolonged driving and sitting. Frequent walking, standing, twisting, climbing stairs, stooping, bending, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension.
