Job Summary: The Substitute School Nurse provides temporary coverage for the regular school nurse, ensuring the health and safety of students and staff. This role involves assessing and treating minor illnesses and injuries, administering medications, and responding to medical emergencies. The substitute nurse also follows established school health policies and procedures to support student well-being.

Key Responsibilities: Provide first aid and emergency care to students and staff. Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders and school policies. Monitor students with chronic illnesses (e.g., diabetes, asthma, epilepsy) and provide necessary care. Maintain accurate health records and document all medical interventions. Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns. Collaborate with school staff to promote health and wellness initiatives. Follow infection control protocols and ensure a safe, hygienic environment. Identify and report potential health hazards or communicable diseases. Assist with vision, hearing, and other health screenings as needed. Support students with special healthcare needs, including those with IEPs or 504 Plans. Qualifications: Education: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) required. Medical Assistants (MA) or Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) may be considered with at least one year of experience. Licensure: Must hold a valid license in the state of employment. Certification: CPR and First Aid certification required. Experience: Prior experience in pediatrics, school nursing, or public health preferred. Skills:

Strong assessment and critical thinking abilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations. Comfortable working independently and making quick decisions in emergencies.

Work Environment: School setting (elementary, middle, or high school). May require standing, walking, and lifting up to 25 pounds. Exposure to common childhood illnesses and infections. Schedule & Compensation: Flexible, on-call basis depending on school needs. Hourly pay based on district or school policies. Pay rate: RN - $30/hour, LPN - 19.80/hour, MA - $15.50/hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This position classification requires subject matter expertise commonly associated with school and public health services knowledge and skills. Responsible and directly related nursing and health provider experience is required to perform problem analysis using widely prescribed and used principles and concepts. The position classification performs decision analysis and makes decisions of considerable consequence, requiring the application and interpretation of data, facts, procedures, and policies. The incumbents meet frequently with school administrators, teachers, internal staff and members of the community to communicate information, data, and alternative problem solutions. This is a sedentary position classification and performs light work that involves sitting, but does require walking and standing for extended periods. This position requires accurate perceiving of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, handling and working with materials and objects, and providing oral information.
