Position Overview Essential Job Duties The College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University (NC State) invites outstanding candidates to apply for two open 3-year residency traditional-track positions in veterinary anatomic pathology beginning July 2026. The training program focuses on hands-on learning of anatomic pathology and ACVP board preparation under the supervision of eight ACVP board-certified anatomic pathologists, with special interests in aquatics/fish, zoo/exotics, swine, cancer, oral, and ocular pathology as well as pedagogy and viral oncogenesis.

The resident will experience a busy caseload working with a wide variety of animals on both necropsy and biopsy services with curricular teaching and research opportunities. The caseload is predominantly cats, dogs, small ruminants, horses, exotics, zoo animals, and aquatics, with smaller numbers of lab animals, cows, poultry, and pigs. Applicants must possess a DVM or equivalent degree(s), have an excellent academic record, strong communication skills, and be committed to a career in veterinary anatomic pathology. NC State University is near two other major universities (Duke University and the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill) and the Research Triangle Park, which includes multiple government agencies, non-profit institutes, biotechnology, and large pharmaceutical companies. In addition, the state diagnostic laboratory lies within close proximity to the CVM campus. Opportunities for collaboration and externships are possible for capable, interested residents.

Other Duties and Responsibilities: Major job duties include performing necropsies and examining surgical pathology specimens, under the supervision of a senior pathologist.

Other Work/Responsibilities Anatomic pathology residents are trained in the morphologic pathology of food, companion, laboratory, aquatic, equine, avian and exotic animals.

Integration of pathologic findings with patient history, clinical findings, clinical pathology data, microbiology, immunology, toxicology, and other ancillary studies is emphasized. Molecular and general pathology principles are emphasized.

Residents will participate in necropsy and histopathology rounds as an important component of program. Residents will be exposed to related disciplines by selecting specialized rotations in disciplines such as poultry pathology, electron microscopy, toxicological pathology, clinical pathology, or research.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education Previous experience in pathology is desirable. Preference will be given to individuals wishing to pursue graduate studies leading to a PhD.

Required License or Certification Eligible for North Carolina Veterinary Licensure and/or Faculty Certificate under the supervision of the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Health Complex
