Job SummaryThis position is responsible for analyzing, designing, and monitoring electrical protection and control systems for transmission, generation, and distribution equipment to ensure optimum operational security, safety, reliability, and overall system integrity which minimizes the probability of system outages and ultimately preserves the delivery of electrical energy to customers.Principal Duties and Responsibilities:Electric System Protection Engineer IAssists in analyzing and developing protective relay settings, relay coordination, short circuit, load flow, or impact studies as well as other various protection system studies of transmission, generation and distribution facilities to predict, analyze and verify performance under various operating situationsAssists in preparing protective relay equipment specifications, settings coordination, control / logic schemes for implementation in the fieldReviews system events and faults with other departments or entities to identifyprotection system issuesReviews expansion or replacement projects to ensure compatibility with existing and future protection system designResponds to customer requests regarding facility / load additions that may includeprotection system analysis, planning, and coordination studies which result in protective system changes.Performs Arc Flash analysis and other protective equipment support for field engineers or personnelProduces work products that adhere to NERC reliability standards through established processesAttends applicable seminars, conferences, and training to stay informed and relevant in industry practicesElectric System Protection Engineer IIAll duties and responsibilities performed as an Engineer I plus:Proficiently analyzes and develops protective relay settings, relay coordination, short circuit, load flow, or impact studies as well as other various protection system studies of transmission, generation and distribution facilities to predict, analyze and verify performance under various operating situationsProficiently prepares protective relay equipment specifications, settings coordination, control / logic schemes for implementation in the fieldProficiently determines accurate coordination of protective devices with any internal or external entities at points where there is a change in ownership or responsibility.Proficiently determines improvements or appropriate corrective actions following event analysisDevelops and performs maintenance of system modeling and databases for transmission, generation and distribution assetsPerforms peer reviews of associate engineer's work products as assigned by department leadElectric System Protection Engineer IIIAll duties and responsibilities performed as an Engineer I & II plus:Research, propose, develop, test, and implement new or improved protective relay scheme design standards using innovative design approaches available to the electrical utility industryProvide subject matter expert support on best practices and approaches to ensure that proper protection techniques are being utilized and implemented internally as well as externally if external entity facilities are impactingActs as a subject matter expert for associated NERC reliability standards by developing process controls and participating in internal compliance adherence processes as well as compliance auditsMaintains engineering proficiency through participating in industry reliability / protection forums or organizationsElectric System Protection Senior EngineerAll duties and responsibilities performed as an Engineer I, II, & III plus:Provide guidance to fellow engineers on technical matters. Make required decisions based on sound technical judgementLead specific technical projects by assigning duties to group members and ensuringwork completed meets highest qualityRepresent group at internal/external meetings, forums, etc. Share key takeaways and offer suggestions for decisions to be madeAnalyze areas for process improvement. Gather stakeholder input and implementimprovements by effective communication and follow-upsRequired Qualifications:Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Required for Selection:Must have the ability to use personal computers and use associated engineering software.Must have working knowledge of Microsoft office.Must understand the operation of high voltage power systems and equipment and can evaluate system performance.Must have the ability to evaluate power system performance.Must have working knowledge of power system symmetrical components.Preferred for Selection:Previous knowledge of medium / high voltage power system protective devices.Previous knowledge and use of power system modeling software.Previous knowledge and use of ASPEN OneLiner, CYME, AcSELerator Quickset, SEL SynchroWave Event, SKM, Python or other programming languages.Previous knowledge of relay setting calculations and coordination techniques for medium / high voltage facilities.Previous knowledge of ANSI/IEEE standards relating to high voltage power equipment as well as NERC reliability standards.Education/Work Experience:Engineer I - Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an ABETaccredited engineering programEngineer II - Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) with a focus in Power System Engineering + 2 years of experience in Power System Protective relayingorBachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an ABET accredited engineering program + 3 years of experience in Power System Protective relayingEngineer III - Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) with a focus in Power System Engineering + 5 years of experience in Power System Protective relayingorBachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an ABET accredited engineering program + 7 years of experience in Power System Protective relayingSenior Engineer- Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) with a focus inPower System Engineering + 8 years of experience in Power System Protective relayingorBachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an ABET accredited engineering program + 10 years of experience in Power System Protective relayingPreferred Additional Qualifications for PositionMaster of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) or more advanced degree with a focus in Power System Engineering.Previous experience implementing or testing medium/high voltage power equipment or associated protection and control equipment.Previous experience in an electrical engineering role with an electric utilityPlease note that if you have a Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, your BS EE degree must be from an ABET Accredited Program.Physical DemandsThe preceding description is not designed to be a complete list of all duties and responsibilities required of the position.Relocation Assistance is availableSuccessful candidates will be considered for the 4 Engineering Levels within this job family based on experience and education.Engineer 1 $67,900 - $101,900Engineer 2 $79,800 - $119,600Engineer 3 $93,800 - $140,700Senior Engineer $110,200 - $165,300As a public utility, NiSource is required to provide continuous service to customers at all times.
