Part Time , Hourly (24-29 hours per week)

Reports to:

Facilities Director

Wage Range:

$21.00 - $27.00 per hour

( new hires may be paid within the lower end of the pay range to start depending on experience)

Summary

Serving more than 300,000 adults and children each year, the Connecticut Science Center is the state's premier destination for informal science learning, a top tourist attraction, a hub for teacher training, and one of the state's foremost resources for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The Building Maintenance Technician will perform general building maintenance and repairs, including, but not limited to painting, plumbing, basic electrical, basic carpentry, heating & cooling and other building requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Performs general building maintenance and repairs that do not require a specialized technician including, but not limited to, painting, plumbing, changing light bulbs, carpentry, flooring, moving furniture, minor repairs, event setup and breakdown

• Inspects and identifies equipment or machines in need of repair

• Daily walkthrough of the back and front of the house for Preventive Maintenance Inspections

• Troubleshoots issues to determine necessary repair

• Checks functionality of fire and safety systems

• Coordinates with the Facilities Director to order supplies and materials needed for repairs and maintenance

• Assists with upkeep and cleanliness of the facilities as needed

• Assists in moving delivered boxes/packages from receiving to their destination within the building

• Assists in making sure hallways and pathways are kept clear of debris

• Uses the work order system to report, track progress and complete needed repairs

• Assists with treating icy spots and snow removal at all entrances as needed

• Collaborates and supports Exhibit Team during renovations, installations, or other exhibit needs

• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Requirements and Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Three (3) or more years proven experience in building maintenance work

• Self-Motivated; with the ability to work alone and complete projects timely

• Experience with general carpentry and repair including, but not limited to framing, finishing and cabinetry a must

• Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems required

• Ability to read technical manuals, catalogs and drawings

• Ability to take apart machines, equipment or devices to remove and replace defective parts

• Ability to use standard shop tools including, but not limited to hand and power tools.

• Physical stamina and dexterity

• Bi-lingual in Spanish preferred

• Very good communication and interpersonal skills

• Maintain a professional demeanor consistent with CSC culture to create a visitor experience that is inviting, welcoming and dependable

• Excellent organizational and time management skills

• Meticulous attention to detail

• Good working knowledge of MS Office Suite on a PC platform

• Excellent verbal and written communications skills

• Works comfortably under pressure and meets tight deadlines

• Ability to work independently

• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends and some holidays as needed

• Ability to be called in for emergencies, such as security/fire alarms at all hours as needed

• Ability and expectation to work on site

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged periods of standing and walking

• Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces

• Uses arms, legs and back muscles for extended periods of time

• Uses hands to handle, feel objects, tools or controls

• Reach with hands and arms

• Ability to climb, stoop, kneel our crouch

• Ability to see, talk, hear, taste & smell

• Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Occasional heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

• Some tasks may require working off the top of a 30 ft. ladder and aerial lifts of more extensive heights.

• May be regularly exposed to caustic chemicals and/or hazardous materials.

• Frequently work near moving mechanical parts

• Exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles

• Risk of electrical shock and vibration

• Occasionally work outside in weather conditions.
