SY 25-26 Instructional Assistant - Special Education GENERAL INFORMATION Title: Instructional Assistant - Special Education Department: Turning Point Academy Salary Grade: Schedule A, Schedule B FLSA Status: Non-exempt Site/Location: Turning Point Academy (Located inside the Lynchburg Regional JDC) and Piedmont Regional JDC Reports to: Program Principal Date: 05/23/2025 Works collaboratively with special education and classroom teachers to provide effective academic instruction and support for at-promise youth at various academic levels and abilities who are detained or incarcerated in a secure setting. In addition,to support the academic and social/emotional growth of students, including IEP goals, objectives, and/or accommodations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Works with individual or small groups of students to reinforce learning objectives and standards. Assists with small group learning activities. Provides instructional support during online learning. Assists with the development of students' social/emotional skills. Supports students in learning classroom/school routines and procedures. Provides supervision and a safe environment for students during structured and unstructured times. Maintains a positive, professional, solution-focused demeanor at all times. Maintains confidentiality. Willingness to substitute or perform duties as requested. Utilizes the team approach by working closely with the other teachers, detention home staff, and administration. Complies with and enforces school rules, and state and federal guidelines. Attends and participates in faculty meetings and other professional meetings. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence. Performs other school duties and assignments as appointed. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or GED. Minimum of sixty (60) credit hours from an accredited post-secondary institution or career technical facility; or an Associate's Degree; or completed the ParaPro assessment. Experience working with at-promise youth or an alternative educational setting preferred, but not required KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

This position requires periods of standing; some walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling. Ability to lift 25 lbs. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

No supervisory responsibilities are assigned to this position at this time TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

This position is split between two Juvenile Detention Centers (Locations: Lynchburg and Farmville). Time spent at each location will vary by population and need. This position may require travel for SOP events and professional development opportunities. If selected for the position, the program administrator will review travel policies and expectations. Travel is usually a single day trip with a few exceptions. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS Turning Point Academy is located inside of the local juvenile detention center facility. Working in the building, you must adhere to both Lynchburg City Schools and the City of Lynchburg safety and security guidelines.
