The City of Rancho Palos Verdes is seeking an enthusiastic, organized, and customer-service oriented Recreation Program Coordinator to play a key role in creating memorable experiences for our community!

DEPARTMENT The Recreation and Parks Department is responsible for managing and operating a comprehensive park system, administering services in the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve, and coordinating numerous community activities and events. The department oversees administration, recreational facilities, programs and classes, special events, the REACH program serving the developmentally disabled community, support services, and open space management.
POSITION This is a non-exempt, full-time position covered by the Rancho Palos Verdes Employees Association.
The Recreation Program Coordinator for special events is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing a wide range of City events that bring the community together. Signature events include the City’s Fourth of July Celebration, Whale of a Day, Egg Hunt, Movies and Concerts in the Park, Trunk or Treat, and Holiday Celebrations, along with other special events throughout the year.
Responsibilities include logistics, permitting, vendor management, staffing, budgeting, marketing, and on-site supervision. The coordinator works closely with internal departments, community partners, and volunteers to ensure safe, engaging, and high-quality events.

Experience coordinating events from planning to post-event evaluation.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to manage multiple events, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.

Strong interpersonal skills, creative problem-solving, and customer service mindset.
Responsibilities
Plan, coordinate, and implement various special events and programs.
Process Special Event Permit Applications and obtain necessary permits.
Ensure insurance coverage is obtained for events, vendors, and contractors.
Prepare staff schedules, promotional content, reports, and documentation.
Develop relationships with vendors and community organizations.
Coordinate logistics, booking, and staffing for events.
Manage vendors and ensure compliance with requirements.
Oversee on-site event execution, inspect facilities, and ensure safety.
Monitor events for smooth operations and address issues promptly.
Provide customer service and respond to inquiries and complaints.
Train and supervise part-time staff and volunteers.
Coordinate services provided by contractors or outside organizations.
Follow health and safety protocols during events.
Assist with budget monitoring, expenditures, and invoices.
Ensure professional and community-focused event delivery.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Ability Knowledge of recreation, special events, community programs, and safety procedures. Ability to work effectively with a team, communicate clearly, manage multiple projects, and foster positive relationships.
Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in recreation or related field with at least one year of experience in recreation program planning or related areas. Supervisory and event experience is highly desirable.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid California Driver’s License or ability to obtain one.
American Red Cross First Aid and CPR certification within three months of hire.
